    Hello,

I am using a joomlarts template called ja_antares, which is a joomla 1.5 template. Before I really start building the site, I want to upgrade everything to joomla 2.5. However, I am wondering if anyone here can help me identify any problems I might encounter or reasons why the migration is not advisable.

Here is the product list for the ja_antares template and a link to joomlarts’ ja_antares template info page for ease of reference in case it helps:

Well-commented template_css.css and index.php file for flexible customization

    Info Page url: http://www.joomlart.com/joomla/templates/ja-antares

One of the key features I want to function properly after the migration is the automated “slideshow” to the right of the main menu. Screenshot attached. The url to my site is: http://familytreemediation.net. Can anyone tell, if this feature will work once I do the migration or if I will run into problems and whether any such problems can be overcome?

Also, in another thread, someone asked me whether this template used a T3 Framework or an earlier version. I wonder if, from the information, I have provided, if anyone can answer this question for me? I think the answer is: “No, it uses neither.” But I am not sure.

I don’t know why that question is important and would like to understand it’s significance. Are there problems I will encounter if the template does not use a T3 Framework when I migrate the site to Joomla 2.5 or if I use an earlier version of the T3 Framework? Can anyone explain what the T3 Framework is? How does it fit in, for example in another site I am working on that uses the joomlarts template ja_community_plus, — there is the K2 system, joomla, and a T3 framework.

I’m just trying to understand the big picture of the big pieces I generally want to aim for making present in my websites as the best available, as well as of any obstacles to be overcome in getting these pieces in place when I start with a template that has not been updated by the template maker, such as my ja_antares template.

Thank you for any help you give me in avoiding unnecessary pain before I start the migration from joomla 1.5 to 2.5!

I should add that I am following the OSTraining tutorials on migrating sites from J1.5 to J2.5 and they referred me to this forum with my questions. I have successfully used Jinstall to upload and install joomla 2.5 but have not yet moved my 1.5 files into a created folder named “oldsite” and moved the files in the jupgrade folder into my root. So you can still see the antares template. Once I do the switch, then I am ready to proceed with the tutorial in making the code cut and pastes to upgrade the template and make it work on the site. So this question is an attempt to foresee any problems that may ostruct or defeat this final goal.

    Thanks so much,

    Hank

    Wow Hank!

I thought I was doing quite well with my learning so I take my hat off to you if you do this! 😉 I’m sure you’ll get quite a lot of advice on this but for my part….

If your main driver is just the slideshow there are many out there on the market that will do what you want including Joomlart’s own one. You’ll have to make sure that any other modules or plugins that are currently used in the 1.5 are available for 2.5.

I personally like the extra flexibility that T3 framework gives you. It sits on top of Joomla and changes the way the template works. If I compare it to normal IT then, for me, it is like me having OSX as the base (Joomla) and then installing a VM layer (T3) so that I can do other stuff i.e. run another operating system on top or windows programmes on my mac. It gives that extra. As for customisation it doesn’t use an index.php and you can do whatever you want using template overides. Really flexible there.

If you do the OSTraining tutorial then it is for Joomla template without any extra framework on it. So a normal Joomla template. Nothing wrong with that – there are lots out there and they seem to do ok. You wouldn’t need the T3 framework for this template if it isn’t using one already.

As I said, hat off to you if you go for it and achieve it. A little pain is to be expected – how much you get is a guess for me!! I’m sure I’ll get picked up if I have not got it right so apologies up front if that is the case.

If it was me doing it, I’d probably pick a completely up to date template, preferably using T3, and then spend my time porting over the content either using the database or doing it manually if I didn’t have lots of content. If I did, I’d probably take a backup and set it as a project on Joomlancers.com and save myself the time and effort and get a specialist to do it for $100 or so!! 🙂

    Wish you luck! :p
