January 29, 2009 at 7:39 am #137621Could someone please answer this.
here in normal font is the answer i was given about howto install the quickstart zip for teline 11.
In bold is the questions i asked… Could someone answer them?1. download the quickstart file to your local pc.
So i download the JA Teline II for joomla 1.5 : Quickstart included Joomla! 1.5.9 + Template, Extensions installation packages (10.77 MB) file located here http://www.joomlart.com/forums/downl…p?do=cat&id=70Open it up and extract the Quickstart zip located within the the main zip.Yes?
2. extract the quickstart zip on a folder on your local machine so you can see all files and folders (like administrator/modules/installation etc)
So i extract all the files out of the quickstart zip and place them in a folder should it have a specific name?
3. Upload all those files in the folder to your webhost using a FTP client of your liking.
I use Cpanel ( control panel ) do i goto the public ftp?Upload it into the folder where you want your joomla installation. Usually this is the root of your webhost.
I dont know what you mean by your joomla installation are you saying i should reinstall joomla or are you refering to the quickstart zip.Would i haveto have joomla installed, i am hosted by bluehost, with the cpanel which controls my website settings i have a program called fantastico deluxe which i used in a recent attempt to reinstall joomla 1.5 and try to erase my previous template installations.
I don’t know where my Joomla installation installed within cpanel, what would the root of the website be( example?) in regards to installing in cpanel. should i place the files in a named folder or should the files be loose.
:SSSS 3, mostly plus 4, and 5. /——- are the complicated areas!!!!!
4. Wait till the upload is finished depending on the ftp client you use this can take a while.
How do i upload at this point — there has been issues when extracting where the file says something like inflating– and some say creating should i wait at this point for something to happen?plus …..I have been able to upload the quickstart zip directly with cpanel and can unzip the files over there… if that is ok could you explain where abouts i will haveto place these files..
5. When upload if finished you can start the installation by going to: http://www.yourdomainnamehere.nl/installation/index.php.
I was confused here to, when i pasted this url —> http://www.yourdomainnamehere.nl/installation/index.php. the title of the page read
Network Access Message: The website cannot be foundSo i take it you mean that i should type part of my address into that url and goto that address
example —msn.com/installation/index.php.
if i’m wrong please correct ….
6. Follow all steps of the joomla installation and make sure you INSTALL SAMPLE DATA, this will fill your installation with demo content.
I dont know how i’m going to get to a point where this Joomla installation screen appears i may haveto ask you how to get this screen …… will this appear on my actual website — or in the cpanel where abouts will it appear?7. The last step of the installation is removing the actuall installation folder on your webhost.
After you removed the installation folder is deleted go to your domain name http://www.yourdomainnamehere.nl and you should have an exact copy of the demo websiteAppoligies, but what do you mean by the actual installation folder? is this the installation folder that we extract to the root folder ie the extracted quickstart files or the quickstart zip or the entire folder itself? could you clarify.
Thankyou so far! i appoligise for the ammount of questions i feel its neccasary for everyone.

Yes, just extract the contents it onto your local hard drive.
<em>@bookpeg 108917 wrote:</em><blockquote>So i extract all the files out of the quickstart zip and place them in a folder should it have a specific name?
It’s usually called httpdocs, webroot, www, public_html. Your host will verify that for you as it may differ from host to host and platform to platform.
<em>@bookpeg 108917 wrote:</em><blockquote>I use Cpanel ( control panel ) do i goto the public ftp?
No, you have to go to your ftp site, should your host provide you with one. It will normally have an address such as ftp://ftp.joomlart.com.
<em>@bookpeg 108917 wrote:</em><blockquote>I dont know what you mean by your joomla installation are you saying i should reinstall joomla or are you refering to the quickstart zip.
We’re referring to what you extracted from the zip file. All those files and directories, administrator, modules, cache, tmp, languages, templates, plugins, etc.
<em>@bookpeg 108917 wrote:</em><blockquote>Would i have to have joomla installed
You should be able to do this yourself. The developer/moderators here can install it for you, but do have a nominal charge for that service. You’ll find that in your member area.
<em>@bookpeg 108917 wrote:</em><blockquote>i am hosted by bluehost, with the cpanel which controls my website settings i have a program called fantastico deluxe which i used in a recent attempt to reinstall joomla 1.5 and try to erase my previous template installations.
Fantastico has nothing to do with anything. All you need to do is upload the contents of your zip file onto your ftp root folder.
<em>@bookpeg 108917 wrote:</em><blockquote>I don’t know where my Joomla installation installed within cpanel.
It won’t simply install should you upload it. If you do upload it, you have to alter directory and file permissions prior to attempting to install it. The installer will tell you what you need to fix in the opening screen.
<em>@bookpeg 108917 wrote:</em><blockquote>what would the root of the website be( example?) in regards to installing in cpanel. should i place the files in a named folder or should the files be loose.
You don’t upload it via cpanel. You have no reason to go to cpanel, apart from to create your database.
<em>@bookpeg 108917 wrote:</em><blockquote>:SSSS 3, mostly plus 4, and 5. /——- are the complicated areas!!!!![
It’s fairly simple, you’ve just jumped into the shallow end and forgot that you need to teach yourself how to swim first. 🙂
<em>@bookpeg 108917 wrote:</em><blockquote>4. Wait till the upload is finished depending on the ftp client you use this can take a while.

When you extract it, it extracts the contents to a directory you specify. Use something like Winzip (available from http://www.winzip.com) should windows explorer not let you do that, or if you are on a mac, StuffIt.
<em>@bookpeg 108917 wrote:</em><blockquote>plus …..I have been able to upload the quickstart zip directly with cpanel and can unzip the files over there… if that is ok could you explain where abouts i will haveto place these files..
No, you do it via ftp. If you uploaded the file structure manually and individually, you’d be there for the next six months.

No, just going to your domain name will work.

It’s the installation folder you extracted from the quick start zip and then uploaded onto your ftp folder. Your host should have provided you with ftp access information.

No problem, we all have to start from somewhere.

You download it, then unzip (extract the contents) of the quickstart file. That is now on your hard drive. You then get those files and upload it onto your web server.
<em>@bookpeg 108922 wrote:</em><blockquote>What i meant was where am i going to upload the files … i already have Joomla installed..
To be clear, you have not installed joomla. You have just downloaded it onto your local drive. You must upload it onto your web server and then start the installation process.
<em>@bookpeg 108922 wrote:</em><blockquote>how do i know what the root folder is ? and where to install it to.</blockquote>
As I mentioned before, your host will or should have given you ftp access details. Ask them to what folder you upload files to. They’ll help you go through that process as they can have a set up specific to them.
This is only the beginning, you will then have to CHMOD directories to 777, create a database, and actually install joomla.

January 29, 2009 at 9:20 am #288776Ok so extract quickstart zip which is located in the main zip file, and extract that into an unnamed folder? or just upload the loose files? anyway.
I installed Joomla through cpanel onto my host address, is it neccasary to uninstall joomla and reinstall it manually in order to upload the quickstart correctly… through cpanel i have access to an ftp it says… i will haveto get more local info before doing this .. but i am told i have ftp access…
through dreamweaver or i think something called filezilla.Do i haveto install joomla even though it has been installed onto my host though cpanel. Or is this a method to illustrate howto install the quickstart correctly.
next by root folder this just means the folder which contains the joomla installation i gather that i would have made via installation to my ftp or if i have file manager on cpanel i take it this doesn’t count.? :.
so in assigning Chmod directories to 777 this will need to be done via ftp or cpanel is this really neccasry seems complicated to just install a quickstart for a template. but ok anyway.
Create a database and install joomla creating database is done in cpaenl and i’ll haveto ask when i’m at this point and installing joomla we discussed …
thankyou thankyou thankyou for your help i will at one point actually try to press the button!

Yes, you upload the contents of the zip file, so the admin, cache, images, all those directories, and all those loose files. If you have already installed joomla (and therefore have an instance running already), you may not be able to just simply upload the quick start package. You’d have to upload the template files and install all the modules manually.
<em>@bookpeg 108932 wrote:</em><blockquote>I installed Joomla through cpanel onto my host address, is it neccasary to uninstall joomla and reinstall it manually in order to upload the quickstart correctly…
It’ll make it easier if you removed the old version (provided you don’t have anything there that can’t be replaced easily content-wise).
<em>@bookpeg 108932 wrote:</em><blockquote>through cpanel i have access to an ftp it says… i will haveto get more local info before doing this .. but i am told i have ftp access…
through dreamweaver or i think something called filezilla.
Filezilla will work a dream. You need to use your logging in info for that which your host should have given to you..
<em>@bookpeg 108932 wrote:</em><blockquote>Do i haveto install joomla even though it has been installed onto my host though cpanel. Or is this a method to illustrate howto install the quickstart correctly.
As I said, it’ll make it easier for you to install this way as the JA guides aren’t always as clear as they could be.
<em>@bookpeg 108932 wrote:</em><blockquote>next by root folder this just means the folder which contains the joomla installation i gather that i would have made via installation to my ftp or if i have file manager on cpanel i take it this doesn’t count.? :.
Just use Filezilla to navigate to your web directory, where your host will tell you to put everything.
<em>@bookpeg 108932 wrote:</em><blockquote>so in assigning Chmod directories to 777 this will need to be done via ftp or cpanel is this really neccasry seems complicated to just install a quickstart for a template. but ok anyway.
It is necessary so that joomla can function properly. You’d have to do it via filezilla. You can right-click folders/files, and then change their write permissions.
<em>@bookpeg 108932 wrote:</em><blockquote>Create a database and install joomla creating database is done in cpaenl and i’ll haveto ask when i’m at this point and installing joomla we discussed …
You’re right on that part, that’s all done via cpanel.

No problem. 🙂

January 29, 2009 at 9:44 am #288784If it does cause too many problems, it is a good idea to get it installed for you by someone who knows what they are doing.
Maybe that’ll be a last resort. 🙂

January 29, 2009 at 1:58 pm #288818When you upload the contents of the zip file, you are not installing joomla, but simply copying it onto your server. When you have uploaded it, you then have to start installing it.
You have to create a database (yes, through cpanel), because it is where usernames, topics, articles, categories, some preferences, etc, are stored.
January 29, 2009 at 6:37 pm #288842Hi Bookpeg – just so you know, you are not the only one that has struggled with Quickstart installation. I just spent an entire week going through this.
I tried every variation possible – including trying to upload each (unzipped) individual file via http://FTP…. in the end it was a very valuable education.
It looks like you are getting some good help here from SPMEDIA – but two things I didn’t see in the thread (maybe I missed it). Once you have everything uploaded and you’ve removed the installation folder, you have to go back in and 1) create a “resized” folder under your httpdocs/images directory AND grant the “resized” folder 777 permissions. Only then will everything appear correctly.
ALSO
In my case, the installation overwrote my database username, and changed it to “admin”.
You can imagine my frustration, when after going through all of this work to get it to finally appear correctly, being unable to login with my username. So, once you go through this and if you have trouble logging in, use “admin” , and the password you have selected should be the same.
Hope this helps…
Kevin

When you install Joomla the username is ALWAYS ‘admin’. This is not your database username, it is your Joomla Administrator username. It would be impossible for Joomla to change you database username.

January 30, 2009 at 9:50 am #288929Hi spmedia me again.
about installing joomla first.
In order to better understand the quickstart installation and upload joomla myself) i first removed the installation of joomla with fantastico through cpanel.
I then downloaded filezilla and found my ftp settings in cpanels ftp accounts next to the logo called main.. to the right of it called configure ftp client and found the settings there — in my case.I used these settings to access the ftp server.
Previous to this i also enterd cpanel and created a database — very scary as i dont know what it actaully does and whether i might ruin the whole site…. anyway : 0* i created that in msql datawizard where i added my user name and passwords and i think gave permission to the user for everything. I dont fully understand why i need this — it would be cool to think that i actually have a user account in joomla as a result as i speak i realise i may know more then i say..
anyway. As well as making the database and installing filezilla and entering ftp settings. i downloaded the newest version of joomla 1.5 ( in m,y case ) and then extracted it into a folder i named joomla … not sure u haveto………. anyway i then opened filezilla and established the connection between me and the host and located the public html folder ( which i’m not sure but i gather is where i haveto place the files ) and am at this moment uploading the files to that folder…. loose!
So what id like to know is what mentioned earlier
“It looks like you are getting some good help here from SPMEDIA – but two things I didn’t see in the thread (maybe I missed it). As at this point i am just installing joomla to my host …. do i need to do this if so how!!!!!
Thanks

January 30, 2009 at 10:54 am #288935You have to understand how Joomla works.
Joomla is a PHP based content management system. In the old days, web pages were individually coded with HTML. So every single page on the site had a corresponding HTML page.
With PHP and a database this is different. You create your content in the Joomla Admin ‘Backend’ and when you save it it is saved to the database.
Then when someone goes to your site the PHP calls the information from the database and and processes it into HTML to display the page. Your PHP constructs the page dynamically. In other words the page, the HTML, does not exist until someone types the URL in their address bar.
When you are installing Joomla you will tell it your database username and password so that it can communicate with the database. You will have a seperate Username and Password for Joomla which will be your Administrator password for logging into the site.
The steps to installing Joomla are simple… you make a database and you copy some files and folders to a web directory. You tell the files in the web directory how to access the database and that’s it. It really is that simple.
Don’t worry if you break something or do it wrong.
It is very easy to start again.
You say you have downloaded Joomla and are FTP’ing that to your public_html…. You do realise that Joomla is INCLUDED in the quickstart. You cannot install the quickstart over or into an existing Joomla site.
Watch this video and I’m sure things will become clearer.. http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=8pWFUGyGxk8&feature=related
