I am a newbie. Using Joomla! 1.5. I’ve downloaded, upzipped and edited JA_Dravity on my localhost and am ready to move it to my host server (hostmonster). I don’t know what files I need to move or the best way to do that. I have reviewed the Quickstart Guide, but it didn’t contain information on making my site live.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. If there is a document that outlines step by step how to go live, please share.

    Thanks,
    Donnalee

Is Joomla already installed on your hostmonster account…or just on your localhost?

For Future Reference: It is ALWAYS easier to build a Joomla! site on a live server than building on a localhost and trying to transfer to the live server. If you don’t want the public to know what you are doing, you can create the site in a subfolder which is basically hidden from the public and then simply redirect the domain when you are ready to go live. This is a MUCH easier method that what you are about to undertake. Transfering can be done…but expect a few issues to crop up.

Okay then…upload EVERYTHING from your localhost to Hostmonster via http://FTP…and click “Yes to all” when asked whether to overwrite anything. This is going to take some time cause Joomla ain’t a small program.

NOTE: Do NOT overwrite your configuration.php file. A lot of settings are different between the localhost and the real server, so leave it as is when you do the regular install. You can always update the config file later.

Be careful that you are uploading in the exact same file/folder structure as is already on your hostmonster account. You don’t want to have your instance of Joomla become a subfolder of what’s already there. It won’t hurt, but you’ll have to redirect your domain.

Then after you have uploaded everything, use your use the phpMyAdmin utility on your localhost to export all the tables in the database to a .sql file. Then import them into the corresponding database on the real server. Some components may need to be configured independantly for the new environment.

That should do it. If not…blow out everything on hostmonster and reupload everything from your localhost. If you are using a QuickStart, then you already have a working copy of Joomla! on your localhost…so just copy everything over and then import your database.

I’m hoping it goes smoothly for you…but it can be awfully tricky…and you may find that in the future you will want to build yoursite on the live server to begin with…it avoids all of the hastle of what you are about to undertake.

    Good Luck young Skywalker.
    John.

    Thanks for the reply.

OK. Let’s start at the beginning. Is there an FTP utility within Joomla. I went to the control panel and selected Extensions and then selected Install/Uninstall. The first option allows me to Upload Package File. I can only select one file at a time, so I created a zip file of my entire directory (remnantp). I then chose Upload File and Install. Didn’t seem to work.

I then went to Hostmonster’s control panel and selected to download file. Unfortunately there, I can’t see my local machine to get all the files. This is not going so well :-).

or… you can install joomlapack which will zip your files and mysql into one neat little installation package. upload it to the server and unpack it, then install just like you did the original JA quickstart package.

jbrett is correct about the config file too, your going to need to keep the old one around.

jbrett is absolutely correct, build in a subdirectory on a live domain.

but…do not redirect to the site in the subdirectory to go live and here is why.

if your going for search engine rankings, all of the power of your site is in your root directory. the search engines give more weight in the rankings to files in the root, and then the subdirectories in desending order,

so…if you build in the subdirectory on a live site, use joomlapack and move the site up a level to the root to go live.

Simply upload all the files to your site, upload your database using phpmyadmin, then edit your configuration.php file to reflect the new changes

My thanks to MJ1256 for calling me to task for my sloppy use of the term “redirect your domain.”
    MJ is absolutely correct.

What I was alluding to was creating a subdomain and folder and once set changing the A record of your domain to recognize that folder as its root. So you’re not redirecting, but permanently changing.

The benefit to this…on Godaddy for instance…you can set up a deluxe or premium hosting account, and drive several (I have 13) separate websites running out of this one hosting account. And we’ve not noticed any trouble with lag or SEO.

    Thanks MJ!

Then we can change this to a solved post?

    I think so…
BTW…I keep seeing questions “Can we mark this solved?” throughout the forum.
How exactly do we do that?

If you press edit a post you have posted you have an option to change prefix on it

Hmm…not seeing an “Edit this Post” button but I do have a Modify. Would going to advance and selecting the green check icon then cause it to show as solved?

Or perhaps my membership rights don’t allow me to see an “Edit this Post” button?
    Thanks, Menalto.
