Hi, I’m hoping some of the programmers here can help make a recommendation for the smartest way to rebuild a large content-based website with Joomla. I’m super excited to be using one of the Joomlart templates. It’s going to look fabulous!!
Essentially, my question is, WHERE should I be building it on the server? If I download it as normal, it will override the home page, which I would not want it to do, as I expect the rebuild to take several months.
Where I unpack it needs to make sense in terms of the files and page names that it will be creating for the thousands of articles that I need to repost.
Any suggestions on how to do this? I would be so grateful for your help!
Thank you!!! 🙂

If you have not used Joomla before, I’d suggest searching for tutorials on just using understanding Joomla itself before dealing with the nuances of Joomlart templates, once you get your head round what Joomla is and what a CMS is etc and an understanding of Joomla itself (which is more important than the template, quickstart etc )and very necessary to know prior to making a Joomla website.
If you have a previous site that is not Joomla based you have to look at what you can reuse or throw out, Images , logos artwork keep
Articles can be re written as often a copy/paste into Joomlas editor takes across formatting commands that play havoc with the display later on.
I could go on but that’s a small recommendation, Learn as much about Joomla especially the Joomla administration area, module creation placement and the general what is a module why use them etc first, then look into offline web development using a wamp such as JSAS and making your new site on your hdd learning how to in a safe zone
If you mess up offline You know it hasn’t destroyed your web site, which is still up etc
Finally when the time comes, its done! works great! etc
ask again and we’ll assist you in the upload and replacement
Good LuckShannonN

March 20, 2009 at 1:58 am #296925Hi Shannon, Thanks so much for your quick reply. I am actually getting more and more familiar with Joomla and have created several small, yet sophisticated sites, with lots of module extensions and such. So, I’m getting the hang of it all.
I’m just most concerned with getting recommendations on how to rebuild this existing large site.
Should I build it on the server? In another file?
What is “offline web development using a wamp such as JSAS and making your new site on your hdd learning how to in a safe zone”? Can you be more specific and offer some suggestions/advice?
Thanks so much,

ValerieHi Valerie
Best to leave a fuller explanation of JSAS and WAMPs for a Google search or wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WAMP 🙂 but in brief, a wamp is a acronyn for Windows Apache MySQL and Perl which all are needed to run a Joomla environment, they run making your computer think its a server and allow you to develop all your sites, upload templates etc as if it were online at your host . you do not need to be conected to teh net to use it or run your site, when site is completed and looking perfect you upload teh whole site structure and all to a empty host joomla is already there installed and running etcI use JSAS as its the fastest easiest I’ve found , a sort of 1 click create environment
solution http://www.jsasonline.com/Hope this gives you the info you needed
