I am still trying to find answers to this problem. I am currently on Joomla 1.5.6 and my template is Rochea. Been on the Joomla forums and gotten no answers so thought I would try here to see if anyone else is having these issues. Also noted similar issues on other sites using Joomlarts templates and Joomla versions 1.5.2 on up. Anyone with any ideas?

When someone registers to create an account, everything seems to work as it should. However, if someone registers and they already have an account, there are no messages prompting them that 1)they are already a user, 2) that user name is already registered, 3) if they hit the login button without entering a user name or password nothing happens.

I have tested this on other Joomla sites and found that it seems to be a common characteristic. Yet, before I upgraded to 1.5.6 from 1.5.2, it seems that there were messages that popped up indicating that:

    1. “that email address is already registered”
    2. “you must login or create an account to enter this area of the site”
    3. when the login button is clicked and not data entered it should take them to a page that tells them to loging or create an account.

None of this is happening. Any ideas? I read somewhere that going to 1.5.7 would help but I did that this morning and it crashed my site…

I had this happen on two sites, but the other sites using the same template and modules had no problem.

it could be a database issue or maybe on the install something was written wron or a query didn’t connect, but did not produce an error.

I also got no help, but i have two ways of dealing with this.

if the site is new and not populated (i know yours is) do a completely new install

as your is populated, it will make things more difficult, but you shouldn’t lose the membership registrations if you do the following.

insatall community builder and use that login module. sync the user database, its just a button in the component management
then, in the login module you can redirect it to the main page or a custom page instead of the user profile if you don’t want that community thing happening.
this will give you much more control on the registrations than the regular login module anyways.

back up your site and try it on a test site if you haven’t used community builder before.

this should fix the problem a lot faster than trying to debug it. the whole setup for cb, even your first try, should take lass that an hour. Debugging will probably never happen if there isn’t already a solution on the joomla forum.

    remember, backup, backup , backup

I have not begun using CB because…too many other issues…like upgraidng to Joomla 1.5.7 from 1.5.6 what a disaster. But first, thanks for the reply.

I am really good at the design, layout, etc….but it is that technical stuff like backing up, FTP usage, test site, etc. that is making me go mad right now. I did backups today through my hosting company – HostGator. Then did my first FTP stuff and not sure I did it right. Have yet to create a test site and would love to know how to do that.

I am getting ready to start this weekend on the CB stuff. So as per usual will do a back up. So here are a couple of really quick, stupid questions:

    1. If you are going to FTP your site to your local host (laptop) do you just FTP the public_html file and everything included in that file to a folder on your laptop as a backup? I know to back up the database, email forwarders etc. The thing that keeps perplexing me is the FTP of what for backing up the site.

    2. Once it is on my laptop…how do I create a test site…????

    3. I have heard from others that CB is the way to go for login type stuff.

    So thanks for your insight…

I am going to add as a friend if that is cool??

no….do not just do the hostgater backups

go to joomla extentions and downlaod joomlapack, it will create a backup with an installer(justlike the quicksart package) that will nake it a cinch to install your backup and restore your site, as well as create test sites.

after you have your joomlapack backup, download it and then upload it using your cpanel to a subdirectory in the root of your site. make sure you create a now empty database and in minutes you will have a test site/copy of your current site up and running

ok, i will give that a try. so at the root directory do I just create a folder like “test_site” to upload the backup to? and then can I uploade the database from the actual site?
