I would advise you to create and put in a custom.css file. So you still can have it after the next updates…
First I tried to put in the precreated empty style.css but it does not works.;)

Sorry but the dropdown arrow only shows if you have added modules to top panel. So you dont have to edit this via css, you only have to remove all items in module manage which have the positions for the top panel (look at template–>layout–> here you see which positions are added there..
in standard case its “position-…” position
