OK, I did my own hack with is a little messy but works by checking the logged in users group name and applying logic from there. I did this inside the “administrator/components/com_jacomment/views/jaview/tmpl/main.php” file to hide the left menu.
I also, in the same file, removed the class from the following DIV to make the UI stretch full screen without the left menu:
<div id=”jacom-maincontent”> // class removed when hiding the left menu; remains when menu should be shown
