Hi Shannon,
Long time no see. Yeah maybe I am a little in a bad mood. Don’t feel well today. :p
But fact is that a lot of people do not realize how many development hours a piece of software, like CB and FB, cost. And then I forget about the hours of PM and testing. They get such piece of software for free and all they can do is nag about one little feature that they miss.No I am not a stockholder or something. I am just a satisfied user who paid 25 euros to say thank you!

CB1.2RC3 is the most stable version of CB ever and it is still a RC. By the way the 25 euro is for developers/firms who want to get to the code early for developing their own components/plugins for CB. Community Builder will be free when it is stable. And be honest, 25 euro will not kill you, isn’t it?
Peter</blockquote>
As you said… This RC is NOT a RC but a stable version which is said to be RC just to justify the fact you have to pay to get it. So it is not a problem of money but of principle.
I am part of many free and open source project and I can not admit that some people claim to be free and open source and ask people to pay to get access to the code of the project.
The CB team just needs to be honest and announce that their obsolete product will be free and that their updated project will be commercial (which is actually the case).
For this reason, I personnally defend Joomunity.
PS: I am a CB member and I paid just to verify that the “RC”is in fact a STABLE version…
Concerning FREE OPEN SOURCE projects, just check … eyeos.org or eyelims.com. You may see my name… These are FREE 😉

October 22, 2008 at 11:45 pm #276642Thanks for the link, but without really doing a two hour comparision I really only see the mainbody bkg has changed colour, if that is all the changes couldn’t JA have sat down and designed this template with a dark and light bkg right from the beginning? and released as one complete template, in the past I had campaigned for all templates to have a range of different backgrounds to extend the life of the template included in each release, while I have been absent from the JA and web scene for 10 mths or so and lost what little skills I once had 😉 I don’t remember a colour change via css and clickable buttons was too hard? Just my thoughts

HI Peter
Sorry you are not at peak health, me neither now a diabetic and having issues 😮 I understand about long hours of development for software and little reward (Financial or other). But I guess if you’re releasing software, you either do it as a commercial venture to recover costs etc or if you go open source make sure its free.
I have no problem with paying a small fee to u/g to a better, later or supported version of good software.
But in my limited experience with both CB and FB, the products are not what I’d consider stable and pay money for, again I stress that’s because I have limited useage and knowlege of all the whizz bang features of CB and the only plus for FB I guess is integration (to Joomla) is a bit smoother than others.
I do think that JA is on the right path by presenting templates with these features included, its something we discussed many months ago about trying.
Hope your health improves cheers

October 23, 2008 at 1:36 am #276647It is a nice alternative version. I think it is too dark still though. Also, where are the moo and suckerfish menus? Why are they taken out?
Anyway, I think it is a nice template, thanks!
October 23, 2008 at 3:50 pm #276727Hi all,
Is that template buggy under IE7? (look at the top menu in my attached file)
My OS: Vista Business SP1
The menu is OK with Firefox 2.x
Thanks
Guillaume

This “light” version was only in the live-demo 2-3 days before official release. So I think (I hope) it was only a raw mockup and JA will come with some new goodies and a breathtaking light version. 😉

October 24, 2008 at 1:41 am #276762you are funny. Did you really just change color? Go look around that templates are “actually” coming in several colors and you giving these members 1 template with 2 “color” versions, instead 2 different templates. 😡

October 24, 2008 at 2:45 am #276775I have mixed opinions. In essence, this is simply another version of the same template, not a separate template. Previous templates have included multiple colors and other variations, for example the two versions of Nagya were far more different than Sanidine and Sanidine II will be.
Other services often give as many as 10 (or more) significantly different color schemes, light and dark. They also don’t count modified versions of existing templates against the membership quota, for example look at RT TerranTribune and TerranTrubune Dark (which was a bonus). Also consider RT MetaMorph and the bonus MetaMorph v2. That’s two design variations on the same template, with a total of 11 color variations between them. So, they give you 11 variants and count it as one template. With Sanidine, Joomlart gives a total of two variations counting as two templates.
YT also gives as many as 10 significant variations, sometimes light and dark, counting as one template.
Sanidine is a great template and I can’t use the dark version. So I’m looking forward to Sanidine II. But I can see how some people feel slighted that it counts as a separate template, whereas other services give 10+ significant variations and call it one template.
Some of the recent criticism of JA has merit. Some of the templates do look like rehashes of previous ones, but on the other hand there are a lot of great templates to choose from. Mesolite, for example, is superb with its VirtueMart integration. Others are similarly good.

September 2009 will be the first month of the new JA-strategy to bring out 1 template a month, wich will give them more time to make more variants of the same template or add more nice extra’s in it.
With kind regards,

October 24, 2008 at 5:56 am #276794That’s a good point. However, if you count all the variations, the other services may provide more per month. For example, in October JA has two templates (Sanidine) with three color schemes each (assuming that Sanidine II has three schemes like Sanidine). RT has two templates, one with six variations and one with 10.
It’s all in how you look at it. JA is still a very good value IMHO, and some months it probably offers more variants than some of the competitors.

October 24, 2008 at 7:49 am #276814It is true, it is the way you look at it. Another variant to look at it is that this month we have 6 templates:
- 2 Joomla templates with 3 color-variants each
- 2 Community Builder templates
- 2 Fireboard templates
Do not forget that templating the FB and CB take time too. It is not only design/develop the Joomla templates this month. We have also FB and CB integrated that have to be templated to suit the Joomla-template. 😉
