    Hi Everyone

This is probably the dumbest question I’ve asked to date :-[

Is there any way of ‘searching’ a directory on the server?

For instance, I have around 1,200 images in various directories within the main /images/ directory.

I would like to use them in future articles, but can’t always remember where I’ve put them, hence, if I could somehow ‘search’ this directory by image name, it would be a great help.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks
    Chris

You can usually use your FTP software. I use CuteFTP-Pro and it can do it. It can be quiet slow though, usually takes a few minutes to search the whole server.

    Thanks Scotty.

I’m using Fetch for FTP. I had a dig around in the user manual and it says I can use a “Send FTP Commands” to search.

However, I tried this and was given an error message that the server ‘does not support searching’.

I’ve opened a support ticket with the hosting company so maybe they will implement this for me.

    Thanks again

As Scotty indicated an FTP package usually allows searches by name or wildcard name I use WSFTP Pro and find it can search quite well, Your hosting cpanel or equivelent should also allow tree searches of folders and sub folders?

Heard back from my hosting company, their comment is “we do not support “FILE INDEX” and such external commands are serious security issue” so I guess I can’t do this via my FTP package.

Thanks ShannonN, I checked via my admin CP, I did have a ‘File Manager’ option but got ‘permission denied’ when trying to access. So, once again, back to the hosting company!

Lets hope the hosting company can change permissions to allow their cp file manager to search for you, being internal there should be no security probs.

Chris did your server support php? if your server support php then the right solution for you is this
    Auto Directory Index PHP Script.

Makes a table that lists the files in a folder, and lets you access the files and subdirectories. Also includes links to each file, icons for each filetype, and the ability to search for files. It also has the option to log access to files and folders and includes a built in anti-leech system.

you can visit the script developer here http://autoindex.sourceforge.net/

    good luck:D
