February 1, 2011 at 10:35 am #159604I have been hearing a lot about security issues with joomla sites. What precautions can be taken to protect a teline iii v2 site?

http://www.mmleoni.net/sql-iniection-lfi-protection-plugin-for-joomla
it is very effective to protect site from SQL injection attacks.and also install Akeeba Backup and download a copy to local drive if any case you can use is as a treasure 🙂

February 1, 2011 at 11:17 am #374724Security issues can occur with any website, not just Joomla. Partly it is down to how well your host configures their server but the main risk is when people do not keep all their scripts up to date.
It is the same as with your PC, would you leave your anti virus protection 2 years out of date and not bother updating windows?
Over the years I’ve seen many people complain that they get hacked only to find that their install has not been kept up to date. I recently helped out a user who was still running Joomla 1.5.8. The reason they were hacked was due to a very old exploit, well known one. Had the user taken the time to update they would have been fine. Instead it took both them and I 2 weeks to fix all their problems (partly down to the quality of their host…..). It also cost him a lot of money to pay me and due to the fact his store was down.
It is not only your Joomla install you should keep up to date. Any other scripts also need that attention. I often hear “I only have Joomla installed and that is up to date”. Remember though that every third party plugin is also at risk including your template and JAT3 plugin so you should keep up your membership (:D). So keep everything up to date and you should be fine. In addition, make sure you regularly backup.

Currently the latest in the 1.5.x line. It will be a few months before I am happy with the available extensions etc and the stability of 1.6.x

February 2, 2011 at 5:26 pm #374874The version of Joomla is shown on the top right of your screen in the admin panel. Probably 1.5.22 but if it is anything earlier then you will need to upgrade.
Yes, use akeeba to move your site. All instructions can be found on the akeeba website.

February 2, 2011 at 6:07 pm #374878Sorry to be ignorant about this but how do I update from 1.5.15 to 1.5.22 without upsetting my teline iii v2 template?

February 2, 2011 at 10:37 pm #374896Updating the Joomla core should have no effect on your template. Just download the patch files suitable for your version from here – http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla/frs/?action=index
You will find a patch file for instance 1.5.15 to 1.5.22 – http://joomlacode.org/gf/download/frsrelease/13106/57191/Joomla_1.5.15_to_1.5.22-Stable-Patch_Package.zip
Once downloaded simply unzip it and ftp all the files therin to your webspace overwriting the existing Joomla files.
Make sure that you backup both your database and your files before you start.
