I would like the mobile template to reflect (or be redirected to) my .MOBI extension on their mobile devices.

Actually we can do it via plugin. It should be better than core hacking.
The logic of plugin: Check browsers -> Mobile browser -> Redirect 🙂
In this case we can also have better determine and options to do.
