I just set up a vanilla site. I am viewing this on my 1080p monitor, but the site will not set to wide mode. is there a way I can control what layout is shown by default?

you can set the layouts in administration > extensions > templates > ja_mero > layout

there you have a tab which shows you defined wide layout, and you can change what is shown there.

to change the actual wide layout you have to go to the actual file in your template directory.
