Sidebar position is present in other layouts , You need to duplicate the template style from template options here >> http://prntscr.com/7uo5f5
And then assign the layout to newly created template style from template options >> Layout >> here > http://prntscr.com/7uo5xv
Use this template style for the menu items where u want to show sidebar .
Note : Both layout are different in positions u can compare it from layout options .

Your instructions were very clear. The only problem is that I have a ”white container” (background) displayed on the home page.

I agree with you, When setting up the layout default. I had this white container displayed. Which I would like to remove.

The default theme contain some margin/padding so it look in this way . You can check the same on the demo Blog pages in demo here > http://ja-fixel.demo.joomlart.com/index.php/en/j-blog .
If you will remove it , it can also effect the other layouts . This is reason In Most template we are using two template styles one for Home page and one as default .
This is not a problem its designed in this way .Update me if you want to remove it or you want to use same homepage layout as demo.
