I been told by support never to modify the core files, (plugins/system/jat3/jat3/….)
but where do I edit when the only times the changes take affect is if I edit the files there?

For example my favicon only changes when I upload it there, NOT the one in my templates/ folder.
Same thing when i need to modify something in the sites template, either the file with the item to modify is in the plugins/system/jat3/ or it only takes affect after I modify files there.

I am using j1.6, teline IV and I updated it a few months back.

    What am I not understanding?

    Thank you

    Hi

If you need to make changes in any of the plugin files, you should copy the particular file, paste copied file in the appropriate location in the current JA template and modify that file.

e.g. say there is some styling in plugins/system/jat3/jat3/base-themes/default/css/template.css then you can simply copy the styling you need to modify, from above said template.css file and add it in templates/your_jatemplate/css/template.css

If you can provide your site url and the modification you are trying to do, I can tell you how you can override the file in plugin from template.

Perfect, I understand now… If the file exists in templates/your_ja/ then it uses that, if not it looks for it in the plugins/system/jat3/……./
