February 24, 2009 at 3:09 am #293183billyk;114251Thanks, jwellman! Feedback like this from my peers gives me goosebumps! (the good kind!) It means a lot to me that you would go so out of your way to thoroughly examine each and every individual site and get the feedback to the creators. I agree, there are some amazing sites this month!
Regards,
Will K.I’d lose the Xhtml validation link from the site I clicked it and it shows 14 errors LOL

I notice on the Quality seeds site ( which looks well done and neat BTW, the disclaimer that the site is under construction.
All sites are continually under construction aren’t they ? and doesn’t fit with a site nominated for som, if its not completed?
But the main thing I see is small things like the imbalance created by the two images on front page one has a text desc that forces a different length, just add a comment the the other for balance, in the gallery one image thumb is smaller than the rest resize to keep uniformity. Little things can make or break a site.Windsurf site front page sorry looks cluttered, article images and video all are diff sizes, no balance – quick gallery one image not resizing to match others (lorry off road), huge empty space on bottom of page left, nice site good content but small let downs (IMHO)
Gemology site looks well planned and balanced , I wonder at testimonies though, without a name and email they mean little to me and are probably fake and it should be TESTIMONIALS . I kinda thought why the background of snowflakes not diamonds …?
I like treespun as it’s really simple and does what it does well, Bobs ‘Tim the toolman approach’ works, only thing I noticed was the links for support center – both said contact bob, I feel that support is all that’s needed, also I’d love to see short videos on turning as well as the text walkthroughs
The portal page and retro enter button of the childrens site doesn’t do it for me nor the 20 second load time for the main site front page, once there it improves and looks well done, looking at the photo gallery I was surprised by the often blurry dark pictures that spoil it completely, most images could be improved in PS, fireworks etc these poor quality ones killed the site for me
Metamar – had to refresh the browser several times before all the gallery would display etc must be a slow internet day for me, the site works well and looks colourful on contact page the word depo should be depot.
The toydistro? well what can you say about a shopping cart? if it works its good? I noticed the text in the search field was truncated, and all the pages I viewed had huge amts of space towards the bottom other than that it looks like a shopping cart
All sites are good but need a tidy up and bit of attn before I’d say they’re ready for a site of month competition, if this is the standard for this month I’d say to Ja put it off till next month when they nominees have addressed issues and there’s a few more competitors then it will be a challenge to pick a winner
hope my comments are not seen as offensive, but critical

I never said I had an eye for design;)
Suggestios on what to do with the images and videos greatfully accepted. Maybe I could use a lightwindow for the videos (if I can work out how) then resize all the pics to the same size.
The latest pics module where the sizes don’t match is a hard one to change. The images are grabbed automatically from the gallery so unless I wrote some software to resize all thumbs to a fixed size it is hard to fix. Even then I would have to regenerate 3000+ existing thumbs. Again, any suggestions appreciated.
The space on the bottom left changes, most og the time it is not there. This is dependent on the rss feeds and the latest pic module. Three of the modules on the right are rss feed so are prone to changing size as is the gallery module if portrait pics are included. Also, not sure what I can do about that.

PM me on images I have some ideas, re rss feeds I know what you mean but if they are ‘destroying’ the balance of the site relegate them somewhere else. Maybe 1 feed only per page? etc
Cheers Shannon

Treespun is still a work in progress, I was not expected to be in any polls :). Bob, is my father, when I was starting to design the site I wanted a more “personal” type feel hence the picture on front page. Which took me 168 shots to get that single good one.. that was a long day.
As for the contact Bob — and secondary support (Rob, which is me) I did this because he has the specific product knowledge and I do all the administration. This has worked out well so far the 3rd week the site was live he received an inquiry from a corporation and we landed a 60 bottle stopper order. This has taken up all our time so the amount of products available on the website has suffered while the large order was fulfilled.
As for the articles I do have plans on creating higher quality for each different product type he creates with more in depth writing and pictures. I have step by step pictures for wine bottle stoppers on my machine now, I just have not written the new article. I thought about video as well, however, I don’t own a video camera as of yet so that is a long term goal.
