Honestly, I appreciate any feedback I can get on my church’s site. Even if someone thinks it’s plain vanilla or just bland, I’d rather know than not know.
We’re working with an older template that doesn’t have all of the flashy features some of the new ones have, but it does the job well, and we see some pretty good traffic and comments. Even JA’s older templates are still great! Although, I would like to upgrade the template to a newer version at sometime. I just haven’t found one that quite suits the site yet. Some of the features I didn’t comment on before are the integration of the Google calendar (which was very easy, I have to admit) and Loudblog. Note that a portion of the page isn’t running on Joomla (the sermon page running Loudblog), this was a little tough to customize.
Anyway, I’m happy to just show up on the poll and get some more visitors, even if it comes in last place. ๐ Really, if I weren’t partial to my church’s site, I’d vote on http://www.oregonsgolf.com. Excellent implementation there.
Thanks,
Matthew Keefe

November 29, 2007 at 2:49 am #233649Matthew, Thanks for the almost vote on my site http://www.oregonsgolf.com. There is nothing wrong with your site as it is. The only thing that might help is maybe a picture or two here and there to help spice up the overall appeal. But from a content view you have done well. Like you said a newer template might help and it may also create more color to the site. The new Fagus template looks really sharp and could help or maybe wait for that perfect template that grabs you right away. The one thing that could give you a kick-start would be to add some news about members or special events with pictures sent to you from the church members. Try to create some involvement from the community and things should start to rock and roll. ๐

November 29, 2007 at 8:49 am #233660Well I just voted, it was a hard choice and i’m not going to say who I voted for, but I will say that it is not easy to get a site to validate once you add stuff. ๐
Great Job! ๐November 29, 2007 at 10:24 am #233667Hi All – great to see that the poll is inspiring people to chat! ๐
There was a rush on votes for Pulse Marketing because I have been talking to everyone I meet about the Poll!
That said, (despite their bias) I asked them to review all of the nominated web sites and vote for their favourite. I personally think they are all superb sites that reflect the very high-standard being produced today. I’m honoured to be part of it!You will also notice that I updated my signature and spent some time (even just a small amount) in the forums helping others. It’s pretty shameless advertising and it seems to be working, but please let me know if it’s a ‘no-no’ ๐ฎ
I also added my site to the Site Showcase (which is how I ended up finding out about the Competition!) and I’m sure the formatting and images I used in my report helped to get a few more votes. (I’d like to think so anyway!)
Either way, JoomlArt uses these Competitions as a way to acknowledge people’s hard work as well as increase traffic to their site, so everyone – get out there, spread the word and get some votes in!
Best of luck ๐

December 1, 2007 at 1:47 am #233732the problem with joomla is that there are so many components and modules available, the sites tend to be over done and cluttered.
sometimes simplicity can actually provide a better experience for the site visitor
the template needs to compliment the type of site you have, be it corporate, informational, portal. ecommerce, social network, etc.
use the template that compliments your type of site.
It isn’t always about the “WOW FACTOR”. The wow factor can prevent the user from finding what your about by distracting the user from finding your message. When a visitor comes to your site the first time. you need to get your message across in a 10 second or less scan. Especially if the visitor enters from a search engine search result.
when judging these sites, one criteria should be “did the site get its message acrossed to me quickly”
as for the W3 validation, it isn’t generally going to happen with a joomla site, they are too complicated once you start adding components and modules, most of which don’t pass W3 themselves..

Not entirely sure, but it looks like it could be Tabs & Slides from JoomlaWorkshttp://extensions.joomla.org/component/option,com_mtree/task,viewlink/link_id,1046/Itemid,35/

It’s the JA-Tabs Module that comes with the JA-Teline Template. ๐

I think a question was raised about how many votes appeared in one day for one site (about 20) and whether they were current users or all new users created in order to vote. So the verification I think was to check on that. I’m sure MiCCAs will do what he thinks is right.
