Is there a file size limit on the header images?
when I try to put my images in there (with the same file names…header1.jpg etc…) they don’t dispay at all.

there isn’t size limit on header images.Image in header display following itemid of menu, you can view http://www.joomlart.com/forums/topic/specific-header-image-for-menu-entries/ to consult about how display header image display.
