I need to create two module positions (far-left and far-right) that are outside the main content area. This would be for skyscraper banners. I’m comfortable creating new module positions within the constraints of the blocks that are in the default layout file (top, middle, bottom), but I’m having trouble arriving at a solution for creating far left/right blocks or module positions that are outside the constraints of the top, middle, and bottom blocks.

Could someone provide some insight?

Can you provide the url of the site you’re working on?

It would also be helpful if you could set “Optimize CSS” to “No” within your Template Manager–General settings
