The slideshow is using the mootools script. mootools and other scripts sometimes don’t harmonise. My guess is that there is a problem with the combination of mootools.v1.1.js and ja-news.js.

You could try using the following slideshow module instead:
http://extensions.joomla.org/component/option,com_mtree/task,viewlink/link_id,2492/Itemid,99999999/

I am not sure if you can customize it to fit in the background image of the ja-slideshow. But if you use the same image dimensions it should be possible.
