i’d like to modify the buttons in the slideshow, i’ve had a play around already but want to add something graphic or edit the css style to give it a bit more visual appeal. can anyone help. this is it so far.

I think that you try to copy style of buttons from the JA ANION http://templates.joomlart.com/ja_anion/ to use for your site.
you can see the firebug of the firefox, it will help you finding those css : http://getfirebug.com/ , http://www.kristarella.com/2009/02/how-to-use-firebug-for-css/
