When I enable JA News Pro the slr column disappears and appears to move (hidden) to the bottom of the page.

When JA News Pro is off the column to the right appears to work okay. I am including a photo to show what it looks like when JA News Pro is not on.

It seems to me that at least one of the articles getting displayed in the JA NewsPro has some code that is breaking the template. Have you by any chance pasted content into articles from microsoft word or any such editor? If you have, you need to clean the code of those articles and check if the right column works fine.
