    Hi,

I have some questions about the video that is used in the JA Appolio template:

    – what is the best maximum file size (in bytes) of the video used? (I store the .mp4 file and the .webm files on my webserver)
    – when is the .mp4 file used and when the .webm file?
    – The “video” zone is not displayed on my smartphone. Can the video also be displayed on smartphones? If yes, do we need a seperate video file for that? What size (width x hight in px) should the video be then?

    Thanks for your help.

Your web-host will be your best port of call in terms of finding out what maximum allowed file size for your server is. JA Appolio only styles the pages on which you included your videos.

As far as “best” or optimal file size for video files you are going to serve to your site visitors, I’d say it depends on your targeted audience. You may want to launch your web-site with a fairly modest size-wise video first and then analyse traffic stats to its page and its access log.

Obviously, if the page would have a 100% bounce rate, then it would be safe to say that it is due to your video file. On the other hand, if you see a consistently growing traffic stats, then you may consider enhancing your video further, including its size.

    MP4 vs WebM Compare

A WebM file consists of VP8 video and Vorbis audio streams, in a container based on a profile of Matroska. It is an audio-video format designed to provide royalty-free, open video compression for use with HTML5 video.

MP4(MPEG-4 Part 14 or .mp4) is a multimedia container format standard specified as a part of MPEG-4 which is developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG).

    Summary:

MP4 is a container which for the most part, uses the H.264 video codec which is almost a standard when it comes to MP4. WebM is just a more open as well as open source video format. It’s format allows for decent playback on even the lowest powered devices.

Now, WebM is better but is not as popular, and thus less frequently used. It’s sponsored by Google, so you may see some WebM videos on YouTube or other Google sites. But if the H.265 codec is released, which stumps WebM since it allows for twice the quality at half the bit rate.
