February 18, 2011 at 3:33 pm #160386I need tips on how to speed pageloads – I have the JAT3 cache turned on, the Joomla cache turned on, the gzip turned on, but still my site gets a “C” from yslow. The main problem, according to the Firefox add-on is too many HTTP requests: 11 external Javascript scripts, 16 external stylesheets, 18 external background images. This is both for Teline IV and Teline II, which seems to load faster. (By comparison, basic Joomla templates get a “B”, as well as themes from the CMS which starts with a “W.”
The question becomes, if all user-facing caches are enabled, how can I reduce the more than 40 http requests required to load the front page.
February 23, 2011 at 7:56 am #378053As almost CMS, Joomla also need quite many required js, css, and image to be a website. However, they’re only loaded in the first time the user visit and cached by browser for the later. So, maybe have no way to reduce the number of http requests as you like. Otherwise, the reason of the slow speed consist of the others such as: the server, the connection, the client computer, …

The problem with js scripts is they halt all operations until loaded. The solution is to load js at the last moment. CSS files are necessary, but one way of reducing the slowdown of all the http requests is to combine the css files. Both tactics are used in most caching extensions, one of which I’ve employed to remove a noticeable lag in load times.

February 23, 2011 at 3:17 pm #378127Hi There,
Did you tried already any caching extension? Otherwise give JA Compress a try and let us know if it works.
It’s no wonder that a basic joomla template is fast, it’s lightweight compared to the feature rich teline template.
Teline is a brilliant news template which does have a lot of images, thats the nature of most newspaper or magazine sites.
I would also try using amazon S3 for images etc, maybe this helps as well. Please get back to us if you have tried any compress solution which works for you.
Cheers

</blockquote>I am using JCH Optimize. It works well, although it is limited to Joomla 1.6. Is JA Compress J1.6-compatible?

</blockquote>My next step is investigating S3. The ultimate measure would be a CDN. The best solution is for designers to code with speed in mind. There was progress getting SEO-aimed designs; the next step is feature-rich templates that are also fast.
