    I have the exact same error message at the same stage when running the quickstart (SQL erorr near ‘DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8’ at line 19).

    I’m hosted by lunarpages and the MySQL version is 4.0.27-standard.

    I have got two other instances of Joomla installed and running quite happily on the same server.

    Would like to know a workaround for this.

    I just edited the sample_data.sql file to remove all references to CHARSET=utf8, now the installation has run for me and the sample content is up there – no idea what problems I may be saving up for later by doing this…

    I know nothing about mysql so was reluctant to remove the charset references.

    Wouldn’t install on any mysql 4.0.* series because of the errors posted above.

    Installs perfectly on mysql 4.1.*
