very strange

Try and type any random username and password for it to go to the ‘incorrect’ page

and for some reason, theres aload of jibberish at the bottom

displaying “herer i sthe rere” instead of “username and password incorrect”

I can’t find where i need to edit this, taking me ages

Hello
The behavior of the menu is normal it will redirected to the system login page when user/pass empty or wrong .
For the issue related to the
displaying “herer i sthe rere” instead of “username and password incorrect”
I can see there should be a custom word defined in your php file .
Go to the file “/html/com_users/login/default_login.php” in template “ja_university_t3”.

Find herer i sthe rere

Remove or edit it as per your needs . By default this value is not in this file
