I tried to ad the suffix _hilite to the login module and it snubbs its nose at me and doesn’t do anything.

Hmmmmm??

Any advise?

Try moving your login form to the Right column.
The left column is not set up (not wide enough, padding styling is different, etc…) to handle the various suffix parameters.
