    Hi
I am trying to substitute the main_menu with a new menu I have created and show it on an inner page (a category page) but this new menu does not show up. I posted this to the joomla forums and they asked me to post here as it is expected to work the way i am configuring it.

This is what is happening :
    1) i got the main_menu on the home page to which I have linked some content categories
    2) i have created a new menu and linked to content items in a particular category
    3) then i go to site modules and open the link to the new menu which i then link to the category (which contains the content items the new menu linked to)

I expected to see this new menu of main_menu mod type to show up on the inner page showing the category content but this has not happened. What am i doing wrong here ?

will appreciate your help on this.

Have you tried to deselect the pages you don’t want the main menu to show on in the main menu module? Just highlight the ones you want it to show on under the “Menu Item Link(s):” parameters, and vice versa for the menu you created.
    Hope this helps.

i did not quite understand your point about -deselecting- menu links.
i selected the required links in the new menu module i created, i thought that should have worked ?

Take a look at the screenshot to see where I am talking about making the selections. If both menus are in the same position and published to the same page, only one is likely to show up.

in my menu manager, main_menu is linked to 5 categories/links (Home + Compute 2008 + 3 other links).
the new menu, conference_menu is linked to 2 content items (submit papers + program committee)

in site modules, main_menu is linked to ‘Home’ only
conference_menu is linked to ‘Compute 2008’

I somehow think that in site modules, i should link the menu modules to their parent items and that is why i linked to ‘Home’ and ‘Compute 2008’ only. is this wrong ? i am puzzled.

So in the module configuration if you have main_menu linked to ‘Home’ only, the main menu will only show on the home page.
And if you have conference_menu linked to ‘Compute 2008’, it will only show on the Compute 2008 page.
If this is what you want then it is configured correctly.

But you said something else that may be an issue.
When you link a menu item to a parent item, it will not show up unless you are using a menu display that shows sub menu items. So see screenshot to make sure you set your menu items correctly in the menu you made.

Also, make sure your modules and menus are published.

thanks. this is where i am now
    1) main_menu has five links (home, acm bangalore, monthly talk, acm compute 2008, membership) – i have set them properly in the site modules area.
    2) conference_menu has two content links (submissions and dates, program and steering committee) – i have again set them properly in the site modules

submissions and dates + program and steering links belong to the ‘acm compute 2008’ content category that is part of the ‘events’ section

as you wrote in your last post, i checked the parent items for ‘submissions and dates’ and ‘program and steering committee’ and i could see only one item ‘top’ (apart from the other content item) which i set them to.

but it is still not working ! what i also want to be clear about is – how do I specify that the conference_menu should appear on the ‘acm compute 2008’ page ? the only way i see this being indirectly done now is by linking the conference menu to a couple of content links (program committee, submissions and dates) which belong to the ‘acm compute 2008’ content category on which page the conference menu items are to show – is this enough ?
