I love the layout and style of Teline II, but my planned site will be more of a constantly changing and evolving magazine with less focus on up-to-the-minute news. On the front page I would like the Teline II news teasers to take their content from articles with each panel representing a section. I would like each panel to contain one selected teaser with image and be styled like Teline II with the panel labels taking their text from the names of selected sections. Is the ja-news thingy free-standing or is it tied to the news module – or can it be configured to do what I have described above?
Btw, I am still waiting for access to templates after paypal payment 4 days ago.

The term, magazine does not have to limit its use for news. Unlike other templates, you can actually group any topic you want into sections, and categories within each section — and present the content, not as simple links but actual articles, where you can have images to go along with text.

That is what makes Teline II different from all other templates, in Joomlart or for that matter other template companies.

As of this writing, the only other template company with a true magazine template is RocketTheme, and that is almost two months after Teline II came out . I saw it, but has not tried the RocketTheme magazine yet.

I like the aesthetic simplicity of the layout of Teline II much better still. Teline II looks more like a magazine than the RocketTheme. Granted, Teline II could use some features included in the RocketTheme.

Just be sure you do a lot of reading, and have some basic understanding of html, css and actually how to create a site. Some customers mistakenly think that they pay $70, and wella, instant website. It does not work that way.

Buying the best car will not make you the best driver, you have to learn to drive. That is true for templates and creating websites too.

If you will not do your assignment, you will have a lot of frustrations, like many Teline II users. Many of the reported errors, are user induced errors. Although it is true that it would not have happened if there is better documentation and regular fixes.

The concept of magazine templates is one that has been spearheaded by Joomlart. It has yet many ways to reach the equivalent of professional online magazines, but it is a good start.

If you do not have much background in creating websites, and not too familiar with scripting, you will have less trouble (not no trouble) if you start with the more stable Joomla 1.0.x-Teline II quickstart kit.

So, you are forewarned. If you prepare yourself you will have better experience, and perhaps you can grow with your site with a nice template, like Teline II.

The only limitation really in regard your website is your imagination and dreams, and how much you are willing to make them work and become reality.

N.B. It is not ready yet, but there is an extension being developed by Joomlart that will allow you to convert other templates to magazine, but I do not know how long before they can get it bug free. I do not suggest

Thanks for a helpful and comprehensive reply. Since my first post I have managed to find more info about Ja-News, and I am looking forward to having a play because it looks to have the functionality I need.

The project being contemplated atm will not be my first time with Joomla! My first taste was about three years ago for the computer user group that I belong to. Nobody was very interested in the extra functionality that a dynamic site offered, and none of our sharpest members could cope with the process of adding content. It was not exactly user-friendly, so with hindsight, I can hardly blame them. After a couple of years I replaced it with an identical looking static site. It’s an interesting point, actually. I very recently put up a couple of J! sites for clients. They were absolutely delighted with the sites, but there is no content going up and I have not heard from them for weeks. Interacting with Joomla! is a steep learning curve for most ordinary users. I am thinking that I may have to prepare a tutorial that looks at it from the users point of view – it would save a lot of time writing long emails. The relevant parts of the manual would go clean over my users heads. Having said that, J!1.5 is much better.

I absolutely aggree with you about the look and feel of Teline II. Clean and restrained. I like that – easy on the eye. I hope that I can retain that feel and at the same time add in a directory, classified ads and (possibly) realestate modules – and who knows, even a forum. 😮 As I mentioned in the other thread, it’s a long term project! Thanks again for the input.

    Hi Limeyard,

Since I posted the above, there have been much progress in Joomla 1.5.x as welll as fixes in the bugs of Teline II itself. Right now, I have shifted completely to Joomla 1.5.x-Teline II.

    Cornelio,

Thanks for the note. It’s good to hear that you are having a good experience with the template. My long-term project is on the back burner again, I’m afraid. I am so busy with other matters – not least the XPsp3 fiasco atm. The dummy pages that I have done look absolutely spiffing (sorry, no url) but I doubt that I will ever be able to marshall the resources to complete the project. I may decide to use the template for an existing not-for-profit site. I am also hopeful of using the JA News component with other templates.
