January 26, 2008 at 10:19 pm #237287I think for Portals, you might want to explore the iJoomla Magazine. There seems to be some promise with the magazine, especially in layout the full articles with whistles and bells that are useful — like quotes from the article, nice placement of related topics specific to the article, insertion of multimedia, etc. Also, it is truely a portal — with multiple major sections as “separate” site rather than just a “small column” in the JA News. You may even have volumens, if you want, like what true only newspapers really are.
I already bought one, but the Founder is dragging her feet creating the Joomla 1.5 compatible version. She told me also that she will work on some features I wanted to be done, but, after several months, I decided to shelve it for now.
I endorse the sentiment of the others Menalto. I would be interested to see what you have done also, and I hope TeeTide would show his too.
What I have done myself were to:
- improve the security of the registration by adding the Community Builder with the captcha
- Add the JA Submit
- Add the simple Shout Box
- I added the FireBoard Forum
— more learning needed here to include more information tabs that I want to appear in the registration module
– this turned out to be a hit, among a group I helped prepare a website for because the Shout Box serves almost like a very fast chat room, for a small group.
I am playing with this dummy site also by moving the modules around.
I am not sure where the bug is, but when I used the JA Teline QuickStart with Joomla 1.0.12, and the previous Fireboard — everything went fine. However, FireBoard has been updated recently and unlike my previous installations, the FireBoard Forum intro page does not recognize the CB Registered Members.
In the case of the Ajax ShoutBox, it works for all my various websites in three different shared servers, for example in this this dummy site However, the websites in my one specific shared server, as shown in the 4th server Joomla dummy site. Would anyone know what would cause that? Or, alternatively, do you know a very good ShoutBox?
In the fourth server, I got this error:
*****************
Not Acceptable
An appropriate representation of the requested resource /j000/administrator/index2.php could not be found on this server.
*****************when I try to access the Shout Box Component in the the 4th server Joomla dummy site. It seems it is a CSS issue– because the shoutbox tables, and the smilies do not have the proper layout.
I do not encounter this error in this dummy site which was installed almost at the same time — just a different server. As you can see, here the Ajax ShoutBox had the proper layout.
If anyone with experience in servers know the cause of the problem, I would be greatly indebted.
Thanks.

January 26, 2008 at 11:14 pm #237293Menalto or whoever is quite good at this,
Is there are good tutorial on “How to create modules” and how to assign them.
For example, I am interested to
- revise the logo and day-date section in the Heading
- for example, remove the day-date section in the Heading and
- place day-date section as simple standard day-date section along with “Vol. Number” and Issue Number, etc. a single column short row, that spans much of the page (parallel to the top navigation section and just below the Heading
- modify the Heading to have perhaps “three cells” in reference to internet tables. In a Portal format
- the center or the rigt may may have the Section logo
- the right, if not used for the Section logo may be used to have say “streaming headlines” or “quotation”
- How do you create a slide show module just above the JA News?

Thanks Menalto,
I just got back the ID Number for my purchase of the iJoomla Magazine. I will reinstall it today, if I can. The last time I did, it was not working when I dio the usual installation of components and modules. If it will not work, I will ask Merav or the other guy Rob to install it for me.
I am creating a new site based on JA Teline and give you Admin access Menalto. It might take me a day.
Just exactly what is “Skype” Menalto?

I was able to place one actually by trial and error. But, I did not like the effect with the slideshow that came with the Avian II. I have downloaded some products that I found promising, and if I like the “free stuff”, I might buy their PRO version.
Also, when I moved the slide show module back to near the “banner module” there was something messed up. When I click to get the full page of a Headline article, it was not behaving propeerly. But, it may have happened because I upgraded the dummy site that started with 1.0.12 to 1.0.13. Not sure.

Hi Guys,
How about if I upload several JA Teline or whatever Joomlart template you want to start with. For example, TeeTide is interested with JA Justicia. Aside from the JA Teline, I wanted to explore the JA Quillaja and JA Avian II.
What I am proposing is this. Using the uploaded “starting” templates, we all collaborate together to develop a better newsportal or magazine site.
Here are some goals and objectives of the collaboration:
- How to improve the security of the registration/login process.
- How to improve the “permissions” system of Joomla.
- What “slide show program(s)” would be good to have on a newsportal/magazine site.
- Discuss and explore other multimedia modules for Joomla.
- Discuss and explore the merits or limitations of specific Forum Boards
- Discuss and explore photogalleries
- Discuss and explore other Features (Extensions) you wish to include to have a more effective “News or Magazine” portal.
- We will help each other work out the “bugs” we encounter with each feature introduced.
- Prepare “tutorials” and “FAQs” from our experience to share with others.
This will include finding ways to improve the screening and approval process during registration and login process. I get so many “unwanted registrants” wanting to access my photogalleries, for example
This is a big issue for me. I am so used with the very well developed “permissions” system of TikiWiki so that I find the Joomla system rather primitive. By the way: What is ACL?
There are some I want to try. But you might have tried something better. So we can compare notes. I would be interested for example with some of the JoomlaWorks as well as the Joomla Shine.
Note that the goals proposed above, go beyond the issues associated with the template alone, or JA Teline alone. So, they cannot be discussed in the Teline section or Joomlart forum quite effectively. As much as I like the Joomlart templates right now, and expect to renew my subscription, I am open to other companies providing templates.
My own preference actually is not so much specific templates, but more “extensions” that would be good to include in a site that will make a site more effective. This will require a “modular” approach to thinking of a template for a specific webpage, and understanding what “modules” to populate a page.
My experience with the various sites that I am interested with is the lack of support, sometimes. And, it gets frustrating. We cannot fault Joomlart or some of these small companies, sometimes because their focus is not just us, but a larger more diverse clientele.
One that we will explore next would be the transition to Joomla 1.5 with the “improved” News or Magazine Portal that we developed together.
Towards achiveing our goal, some of the more effective applications we will need would be commercial. What I would ask of you is to help procure these commercial extensions, so that together we can learn to use them.
I already have a license for the iJoomla Magazine, so I will contribute that. It has potentials but I am not yet sure if it is the program for me. Menalto indicated in his response post that he may be interested to help explore the iJoomla Magazine.
Anyway, I will start the above, and I hope you will join so that we can truly help each other create a good News/Magazine Portal.

January 28, 2008 at 12:43 am #237353Hey guys. We’ve got Teline loaded up and almost ready to go for our new site. However, I’m all for this collaborative effort to come up with another news portal. Hopefully, the very talented Menalto will share his Teline version soon.
In the meantime, Raaj has done a wonderful job with the Teline site I’ve linked below. Notice the CNN styling in the “Photos” and “More Headlines” sections:

January 28, 2008 at 5:25 pm #237458Hey Dan,
Disregard the previous link that I posted above.
I will post a new dummy Teline site that everyone here who is interested may help develop by share ideas on how to improve the Teline. I called the site tenatively as Treasure of the Internet @Troubleshoooting because I was integrating some other extensions from other companies, and they are not compatible with the way I configured my PhotoGalleries. Also, I thought the IJoomla Magazine will work but while I was able to install it correctly, when I try to access The Admin Component, I got error message.
Hi TeeTide:
I saw the site by Raaj, also, because it is the one cited by Joomla Works (?). I like what he did, and was about to cite it to Menalto when I show him what I wanted my site to look like.
I found the Raaj site because I was looking at a number of the “multimedia” extensions developed by different companies that I wanted incorporated too. That is one area that I want to discuss with the group.

We are all interested Menalto. I have not just sent you a private mail because there was a snag in the iJoomla Magazine. I was able to install it, an improvement from last time which did not install properly because something was missing. This time, I got an error message when I tried to access the IJoomla Magazine throught the Component Panel.
I think it may just be an incompatibility issue — just like the initial problems I had with the JA Teline Quickstart. I am not just sure what is causing the incompatibility with iJoomla this time.
Have you ever worked with the iJoomla Magazine?
