June 11, 2008 at 8:09 am #129559Hi Everyone
I’m quite new around here and have just downloaded Teline II, along with Joomla 1.5.3 and am getting ready to start the installation.
However, I’ve read several threads on the forum here about people having problems, and various bugs in Joomla 1.5.3 (some extensions still in ‘beta’ mode, etc.).
I am a complete novice and have never installed Joomla or a template before, so my question please:
1. Would it be easier for me to install Joomla 1.0.15 and Teline template, or should I continue and try install 1.5.3 and Teline 2?
2. What actually would be the advantages of installing the most recent Joomla, and the Teline II template over the previous versions?
Many thanks

Chris</blockquote>Hi Chris,
It looks like you have read quite a lot already, so if I were in your shoes just follow your instincts and what you think is best for the focus of your website, and long term direction.
There is no one correct answer obviously, and it becomes a matter of preference. So, I will share my own experience. Here I will focus only on the Use the “QuickStart Kit”
A. First the most important tip: Use the “QuickStart Kit”
***************************
I am more partial to the Joomla 1.0x for many reasons, including those you alluded to. From reading many posts, quite a few people encountered some installation or post-installation problems, quite often the problems arose because of lack of familiarity with Joomla, basic scripting or foundation in CSS. For new users (or even for myself), I would suggest the Joomla! 1.0.x. Just remember that this will not be the last Joomla-Joomlart installation you will ever do. So, there is a lot of opportunity to go to the next level, once you are more confident with your understanding of Joomla and extensions, and some basic CSS and scripting. Thus, the focus below are for Joomla! 1.0.x related installations.
***************************
http://www.joomlart.com/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=493
File Name: JA Teline II v1.2 for Joomla! 1.0.x (7.68 MB) Download
Author: JoomlArt (Uploaded by kashxo)
Date Added: 05-07-2008
Downloads: 2020
Grade: A+JA Teline II v1.2 for Joomla 1.0.x.zip => unzip => JA Teline II v1a 1.0.x-1 Folder => three folders inside => go to QuickStart folder => unpack => ja_teline_ii_1.0kstart_v1.2 => upload the whole ja_teline_ii_1.0kstart_v1.2 only folder via FTP
***************************If you are doing a “Fresh Install”, one of the best favor that Joomlart has ever done for the customers is the “QuickStart Kit” — a combination of a Joomla and a complete Joomlart template kit.
I posted the original “Easy Browser-based Joomla Installation” link from Joomla itself (included as link in the posted link below), and you should master that before you do anything. I also posted a very detailed QuickStart procedure intended for new users (for those using a “Joomla 1.0x plus any Joomlart template QuickStart kit”:
General Steps for the QuickStart Installations of Joomla – Joomlart Template kits.
http://www.joomlart.com/forums/topic/general-steps-for-the-quickstart-installations-of-joomla-joomlart-template-kits/The QuickStart procedure must be the first installation attempt any user (newbie or experienced) must consider, and is almost compulsary to new users. It should be “foolproof” procedure, if you understood the Joomla “Easy Browser-based Joomla Installation” or even the one I posted for beginning users.
If for any reason, you do not succeed with the QuickStart procedure, do yourself a very big favor: Do not attempt to salvage the wreckage. Read the procedure again and again, and focus in trying to find out what you might have done incorrectly. Of course, if you think it is a possible cause — that you have a bad copy of a downloaded “Joomla 1.0x plus any Joomlart template QuickStart kit” re-download, a new “QuickStart Kit”.
Perform another “Fresh Install”.
Keep on doing this “Fresh Install”, if you have to, until you get it correctly. Re-read the procedure again and again. to make sure that you really got it correctly. This will not be the last Joomla-Joomlart template kit installation you will ever do, so it is most importand at this stage to understand what could have gone awry. Just do what you think is needed.
Cornelio
N.B. Reading the postings, I found less people posting about problems with the Joomla 1.0x; or there is a possibility that almost the majority have opted for Joomla 1.5.x
I am sure you have read Hung’s sticky link for the Joomla 1.5.x. Menalto also provided one in response to the link I included above. And, if I remember correctly, there is also one in the Tutorial, all for Joomla 1.5.x

June 11, 2008 at 8:03 pm #253119Hi Chris,
Before JA Teline II, the only other template I used from Joomlart for my websites was the original JA Teline. For many reasons, it was the most popular template of Joomlart, before JA Teline II.
If your envisioned website will have multiple sections and multiple categories — whether you are developing a news or magazine site, or any site requiring grouping and subgrouping — your best bet “growing” with your site is JA Teline II.
Every extension or module in the arsenal of Joomlart, or many of the extensions of Joomla for that matter.
There are indeed layouting features of the original JA Teline that are much more aesthetically elegant than that adopted in JA Teline II, for example the JA News. I shared my views on this and other thoughts on the layout of JA News and JA Teline II in another post
Can you please provide the full template schematic layout for JA Teline II
http://www.joomlart.com/forums/topic/can-you-please-provide-the-full-template-schematic-layout-for-ja-teline-ii/It is far from fully developed yet, and still has a long way to go, but JA Teline II is the next evolutionary stage of the original JA Teline. Thus, whether it is more difficult to learn or to install JA Teline II is irrelevant.
Of course, again, this is my personal bias. The first day of my membership, this is one of my first request:
Teline Template and the iJoomla Portal News
http://www.joomlart.com/forums/topic/teline-template-and-the-ijoomla-portal-news/What I requested is far more ambitious than JA Teline II but the latter is the most advanced news-magazine templates without requiring such dedicated scripts, like the iJoomla News or Magazine (each costs $70 for each domain).

June 11, 2008 at 8:35 pm #253124There was a big push to use Joomla 1.5x, something on the works for almost two years, or more, I think, and it finally came in January 2008.
Is it ready and stable. The basic Joomla is but as you pointed out, and have read, many of the extensions that many use are not yet native to Joomla 1.5x. Some may extensions may work with Joomla1.5x under legacy mode, but turning the legacy mode could cause problems elsewhere.
For example: Do you want a Community Builder, a Forum, a Shoutbox, etc.?
TeeTide found it to be slow (well, this is obvious from the size of the QuickStart kit), and if you have noticed, many of the “questions, errors, issues” posted here are about the installation and post installation of JA Teline II plus the Joomla 1.5x Having said this, many of these “questions, errors, issues” are due to the inexperience, lack of familiarity or lack of scripting background by the new users — many of these problems can and have been solved, some with the help of others, while quite a few by the posters themselves.
My main concern is the Registration/Login module — the default is not very secure, if you wish to avoid spam — manual or bot registration. The core Joomla Team acknowledged this problem with the Registration/Login vulnerability but right now, it is just a white paper, and will not be addressed until Joomla 1.6 (when will the latter be available, more likely in two years).
Community Builder (CB) has addressed some of the Registration/Login issues, but still quite primitive compared to the permissions capabilities of CMS like TikiWiki. My other concern with CB is that it is becoming more bulky because as the name implies, it wanted to become the Community Builder for Joomla, integrating as plugins that could otherwise be integrated directly through Joomla (Extensions Installer). The consequence of all this is that historically Joomlapolis (the developer_of CB) has always lagged behin in the release of CB for every update of Joomla version — not a month but sometimes 6-8 months.
The question becomes therefore like some people face with the iPhone — they want to be part of the future of mobile communication, but while realizing its potential are wary of the current limitations.
In effect therefore, it becomes a matter of personal preference whether to stick with the more stable Joomla 1.0.x or go with the direction of the future. In this regard, again it is like the old Apple using the G4-G5 vs the current Intel based Mac computers, Joomla 1.5.x is quite a different animal than Joomla 1.0.x. The older version cannot be upgraded to the Joomla 1.5.x.
On the other hand, there are tools (extensions) that can be used to easily “transfer” (not upgrade) the “data files” from Joomla 1.0.x to Joomla 1.5.x, or so they say in the Joomla extensions site. I have not tried it yet, but many claimed it worked for them.
My own bias is that I am not yet as comfortable with Joomla 1.5x, and could not accept the compromises of its limitations (especially the Registration/login issue) — so I will stick for now with Joomla 1.0x. I am not there yet, but in regard JA Teline II, I have not encountered many of the problems reported by those using Joomla 1.5x.

June 12, 2008 at 5:21 am #253181Many thanks Cornelio … some fantastic information for me there!
I took a long hard look at both the ‘demo’ sites yesterday (both with regards the layout and the functionality) and I believe that Teline II would be the best product to achieve exactly what I require!
If this means having to tackle a few Joomla bugs en-route, then so be it!! I suppose once the bug is fixed, it’s fixed for good and I can move on to the next!
So, I think, based on the above and your informed replies, I will install Joomla 1.5.3 and reproduce the demo site for Teline II from the download!
Then it will be time to take a deep breath, grab a cold beer and dive in for my first ever Joomla/JoomlArt site!
Thanks again

June 12, 2008 at 7:08 am #253187Don’t grab that beer, one here and one there can give you some unwanted results:p
Before you choose version, go to Joomla.org and check the requirements and see if your host fill them.
If they do, go with 1.5, learn to use it. Since its different from 1.0.xx version.questbg Friendquestbg

😀
OK. You’ll be happy to know that I now have 1.5 installed and running. I have the Teline II demo site up and running.
I’ve created new users at every level and logged in, this works fine. I’ve moved articles within sections, changed sections, editied text, etc.
So far, so good. No problems and I’m happy, however…
Could I ask some really basic questions please?
I would really now like to change the current sections/categories from the ones on the demo site to our ‘final’ ones. It appears that I can do this easily in the Section Manager and the Categories Manager?
However, just to be on the safe side, I decided to actually modify the existing sections/categories to rename them? That way, they should stay exactly where they are on the page for now?
I went into the ‘Artist’ section in the Manager and changed Title and Alias to what I wanted. I then previewed this, but nothing changed on the page? I expected the menu at the top and the actual ‘coloured heading’ to have changed to new text.
I hastily hit ‘cancel’ and got out of there fast!
So, what am I doing wrong, and how do I change existing sections/categories to our own? Or is it best to create new ones and then place in the same position as the old ones I wish to replace? Would this then modify menus and headings?
I think a beer is most certainly on the cards now 🙂
Thanks for the support!!!

Chris</blockquote>Hi Craig,
You are not doing anything wrong. I had the same problem initially, and it is posted.
JA News Section Heading:
The corresponding Section heading titles in the JA News module will change only when you hit save.
Magazine menu (what you call “Top” headings)
Note that the navigation Menu at the top (just below the Site logo) refers to the links included in the Magazine menu which is not automatically revised when you change any of the Sections in the Section menu. In fact, the Links in the Magazine menu need not be limited to sections indicated in the Section menu.
The original name of a Section in the Magazine menu has to be edited accordingly to correspond to its name in the Section menu (since it is not an automatic change). More critical, the Section name in the Magazine menu must be correlated with its corresponding Section name in “Section” menu. If the correlation is not done, there will be some undesired consequences, as explained below.
Let us take your example:
Let us consider the change Artist => Arts and Culture in the Section menu.
As indicated above, this change in the Section menu will not automatically revise the corresponding Section name in the Magazine menu — you have to edit accordingly.
When you go to the Magazine menu do the same thing:
Artist => revise to Arts and Culture (in Magazine menu)
to save space in the Magazine menu, you may shorten name as follows:
Artist => revise to Arts & Culture (in Magazine menu)
or
Artist => revise to Arts-Culture (in Magazine menu)
or even
Artist => revise simpy to the more generic Culture (in Magazine menu)However, the more critical part of the revision in the Magazine menu is to ensure that the revised name Arts and Culture (as revised in the Magazine menu) be linked or correlated with the corresponding revised name in the Section menu.
To achieve the above:
When you are in the Magazine menu, when you click on the
Artist => change to Arts and Culture (as indicated in the example)
The next step is more critical:
Just below the revised name (in the Magazine menu) would be list of Sections (as revised in your Sections menu).
You need to highlight the appropriate Section (let us assume you revised the name also as Arts and Culture), rather than the default “All Sections”.
If you do not link or correlate the revised Section name in the Magazine menu to its counterpart in the Sections menu, the corresponding Categories associated with the specific Section (in the Section menu) will not be correlated properly with the revised name of the Section in the Magazine menu.
Moreover, if the revised names are not linked — Magazine menu => Section menu — a new Arts and Culture will appear, but the original “Artist” magazine name will be retained (with no categories). Also, without proper correlation between revised Section name in the Magazine menu to its counterpart in the Section menu, other undesired consequences appear in the Intro Section page, when you click on the revised name from Magazine menu.

June 13, 2008 at 2:46 pm #253437Many thanks Cornelio … that works fine now … I’ve now finished the first three Sections and Categories.
Just waiting to here now about my post regarding major issues on the Mac between Safari and Firefox before I do any more!
