March 4, 2012 at 1:27 pm #174596I have finally found out what is causing my problems that my site is all the time going down; the latest template of JA Business. Yesterday I had to rebuild the whole site again and when I checked this morning I got a error 500 in Internet Explorer. Then I tried everything but when I reinstalled Joomla through Admin Tools I found out that my template is causing also trouble.
I reinstalled a older version and this gives no problems only the latest one.
I think this has to be checked because I am a little tired now to keep on working like this all the time on my website.
P.s. The website is still under construction because I had to start all over again so please be carefull!

March 4, 2012 at 2:32 pm #441751A 500 internal server error can be so many things. It is usually down to a server configuration problem such as running out of memory or it trying to do something that it shouldn’t. The only way to be sure exactly the cause of the 500 error is to see the error logs generated on your host. If you can tell them the time you saw the error they can tell you the error message that was generated. Without that we can have no idea as to the cause.

March 4, 2012 at 2:36 pm #441752Just looking at your back end. May I suggest you install Akeeba Backup and take a backup of your site using that excellent tool? Using that while you are in development is a real life saver.

March 4, 2012 at 2:57 pm #441755Are you sure it is the template that is causing the error 500? This is a server error most of the time caused by a time-out because something takes longer than allowed to load. My website (http://duiksmurf.com) is also based on JA_business. I am using the latest version. Occasionally I get a 500 error but that is easily solved by reloading the page. Apparently the (shared) server was too busy at that moment. Not really a problem if it doesn’t happen all the time. If it happens consistently then there is probably something wrong with the site.
What I experienced is that my layout was completely ruined by upgrading to the latest version of this template; that is because I had done my customization as explained in the Joomlart videos in a directory local. That directory doesn’t exist anymore and is no longer used in the 2.5 version so all my customizations were gone. Now I have all customizations in a separate theme in the themes folder and everything works fine.I see that the Cylex Silver member image is coming from another server. It would be better to copy the image to your own server and put the image in a URL-link as you did with the other two images. It makes you independent from the availability of that server. I don’t think that caused the problem but better safe than sorry.
Good luck rebuilding your site. Maybe it is better to remove the message about the crash. It doesn’t sound good for a company in the ICT-service field that an ICT-problem caused their website to crash and that apparently no backup was available to reload the site quickly.
Regards, John (retired ICT-manager)

March 4, 2012 at 7:20 pm #441782Thank you John for the advice! I removed that text because that is indeed silly. About the JA Business theme; it is the theme that is giving the trouble. When I switch to another one the alle is fine but when I switch back it goes wrong. I had installed a older version which worked in the beginning but after a while it goes blank also.
I hope that Phill has a answer because I am spending to much time on my site now actually and to be honest this is no fun anymore.
Edit: I think I go crazy now; 1st of all I have installed the latest version again and so far it is working but I expect soon it will go wrong again. 2nd I am trying to change the text of the frontpage but now that is not working anymore also. 3rd My slideshow goes crazy again. Really I get sick and tired of this.

March 4, 2012 at 7:50 pm #441788We can help you but we need to know what the error is. A 500 error means that the server is crashing and only the server logs will tell us why. Speak to your host and ask them to give you the error generated in their logs from the 500.

March 4, 2012 at 8:02 pm #441789I can give you access to the Plesk so you can see it yourself if you want. For me the problems are building a wall at the moment.

March 4, 2012 at 8:09 pm #441791But one thing I don’t understand; I can all the time see the backend. So I don’t think it has to do with the server…….but then again I am looking in the dark now……

March 4, 2012 at 8:18 pm #441792Lol, I doubt you can see the message from plesk. Your host should be able to tell you quickly what the message is.
I know it sounds like we are sloping our shoulders here. Sadly though a 500 error can come from so many things and the only way to determine what is to see the error message.

March 4, 2012 at 8:40 pm #441795:(( Ok I will ask them and report back to you. Can you check for me 2 other things? Can you fix my slideshow because it is not working at all and I am trying to adjust the article Welkom bij ViVa Computers but all the time it goes back to plain text?
If you don’t have time for this then it is ok then I will try more.
Thank you in advance for all effort!

March 4, 2012 at 8:43 pm #441796When you say that your site is going wrong do you mean that you always get a 500 error or is something else happening? And what happens when you do a page reload after you got a 500 error?
Do you have development mode enabled (template manager, global configuration of the template)? if not, enable it as long as you are working on your site; also disable optimization of CSS and JS.
How are you doing your customization? Do you create a new theme (new directory in your themes directory with in there a css-directory for your css-customizations (template.css), a html-directory in case you need customizations of standard behaviour, an image-directory for your custom images)? or do you modify an existing theme by modifying the template.css and the images of the theme? Both work but the first one gives you a clearer separation between your customizations and the standard theme.
And: as soon as you have a working version, even if it is not yet perfect, make a backup (akeeba backup). It saves you a lot of time.

March 4, 2012 at 9:01 pm #441800I see a strange size for the slideshow:
<div class=”ja-slide-main” style=”width: 2910px; left: -1940px;”>
<div class=”ja-slide-item” style=”width: 970px; height: 175px;”>
<img title=”Diensten” alt=”Diensten” src=”/images/resized/images/Computer_diensten_205_175.jpg”> </div>
<div class=”ja-slide-item” style=”width: 970px; height: 175px;”>
<img title=”Ondersteuning” alt=”Ondersteuning” src=”/images/resized/images/help_205_175.jpg”> </div>
<div class=”ja-slide-item” style=”width: 970px; height: 175px;”>
<img title=”Laptop reparatie” alt=”Laptop reparatie” src=”/images/resized/images/laptop-reparaties_205_175.jpg”> </div>
</div>
Look at the first line with a width of 2910px. I don’t know where this comes from, so check your settings in this module.Regards, John

March 4, 2012 at 9:35 pm #441805Looks better already. Your logo is back in place and the strange width of the slideshow is gone also. So you are making progress.
It’s late already at your side of the world. I am in CuraƧao and the sun is still shining.
I check back with you tomorrow but not early in your morning.Regards, John
