The site was running very slow with the twitter module in place.

Having disabled the twitter module, the site has speeded up considerable from taking seconds to load a page to almost instantaneous.

This may not apply to everyone, but wanted to offer a useful suggestion.:)

Because the ja twitter must to made a request to the twitter service, the site will spend a short time to connect and process the data response, the ja twitter has the cache option, you can use this cache option to improve the performance. Beside, you should have a plan to improve the performance better more.
