September 19, 2010 at 9:22 pm #154453:confused:Hi guys,
I am looking to get a new joomla template designed. I want this one to be simple and fast. I don’t need the dropdown menus, I don’t need mootools capabilities or highslide or any other javascript/ajax effects. I would like some nice module variations and typography variations (probably done through CSS only, right?) and I don’t care for anything else. I might also need whatever script that takes the image in your posts and re-sizes it for the homepage. I keep thinking that I don’t need the JAT3 framework and that a plain php/css template will do just fine. I want the template to be fast.
Given what I just said above, is there any benefit to me designing that template using JAT3 framework? I understand the JAT3 framework will allow all sorts of nice features and future extensions later and maybe make it easier to customize in the future, but I’m just worried all the features I don’t use will somehow slow down the loading of my website by loading scripts I don’t use.
Or should I still use the JAT3 framework and just “turn off” all the stuff I don’t need? Will I be able to make sure those un-used scripts don’t affect my page load?
Can someone help me understand a little better?
Thank You – Johnnydontregartha Frienddontregartha

September 27, 2010 at 2:21 pm #356818Hi Johnny,
the T3 template is very fast. And when you’re happy with the set up of your pages, switch on the Javascript and CSS caches and it will zip along.
One of my developers wasn’t sure about using this – it takes a bit of getting used to.
However, once you’ve got it going, mods to column layouts, typography are just SOOO easy.
You can use just the scripts you need.
The basic idea with T2 is a modular and nested CSS structure. The core structure is defined in the JAT3 plug in. You add your look and feel using themes at the top level.
I love it now.

September 27, 2010 at 3:05 pm #356821Hi Johnny,
I think I will give out a list of Do and Dont
Don’t use JAT3 if
+++++– You can handcode a core HTML/CSS infrastructure as good as JAT3 Blank to stat with Visit the demo and use firebug to view the source code.
– You can include a better CSS/JS compression + Gzip solution
– You don’t want to expand, extend our site later. Do you need a better 404page then Joomla 404 default page? Will you need a new layout for your blog next year? Are you sure if that you won’t want to change the template next month when JA has a new design that fit better for the site?
– You don’t support Iphone, Ipad, Android in a native “mobile” layout
and above all
– You have a lot of time.
Do use JAT3 if
+++++
– more than 1 of the above list are not right for you.
and above all
– you want it to be completed in a day or 2 🙂
What’s next?Make a cup of coffee and watch the video

September 28, 2010 at 8:28 am #356917I am completely impressed with JAT3. My first custom template required some learning, but it is worth it. Because I never read the documentation, I just hacked the existing CSS files, leaving marks wherever I changed or added, then moved all of my changes into a single css file. The video will help anyone to understand how quick and easy this is.
Brilliant work Hung Dinh and the JA Team.

November 3, 2010 at 5:36 am #361473Thank you all for your responses. I shall place all my faith in Joomlart’s code and use it for the new template. Thank you!
