I just installed a plugin called Canonical link. While doing so and enabling This plugin fixes lots of issues for SEF.

What happens when I enable the permanent redirect, is that the unset of it results and a problematic result that is unacceptable by the Joomla rules..

Now I spoke to the developer and this is what he says.

I checked out now, and the extension generates correct canonical link. If you look at the source code of the homepage when the plugin is enabled, there will be

"<link href="http://www.workouthealthclub.nl" rel="canonical">"

If you disable the extension, the canonical link won't be present. So this is definitely fine, plus redirection is not enabled in the plugin's settings. 

However, I had a look about why you have this issue - you use template that "overrides" Joomla's core com_content component by adding new layouts in there. When you open the Menus -> Main Menu -> Home and see what is written under Link field, you will see this: index.php?option=com_content&view=featured&layout=uber:blank. But this is not supported by the core router of the com_content component, that's why it doesn't unset it in the url when you view the homepage later. Basically, the provider of the template or whoever made this created override in a way that's not recommended for core components, and it creates issues like the one you have. It definitely has nothing to do with canonical extension, which you can verify by disabling it.
