July 25, 2011 at 9:55 pm #402989You should update the template and extensions using the JA Extension Manager that should have been included in your download. If it is not already installed on your site then please install it from the JA Downloads.

July 26, 2011 at 9:07 am #403061You will have to do it the manual method of uninstalling and re-installing each extension one by one. Make sure you take backups of both your database and your files first ( I recommend using Akeeba to do this). Remember also to take notes of any changes you have made to the css or other files in the customization of your site.
The other method and the one I would use would be to make a copy of your site using Akeeba and install it on your local machine using a tool such as Wamp. I would then use the extension manager to update all the plugins from there and when I was happy use Akeeba once again to restore my site to the live host.

July 26, 2011 at 9:40 am #403077Some extensions there may be problems that way around. This is because some updates write to the database.
You will also have to apply any changes you have already made to files again as you will have overwritten them.

July 26, 2011 at 6:50 pm #403170That is not really true!!
I installed some new modules and extensions and compared it with the database (before and after update and there were no modifications).
i will give you a final answer when i installed all new updates..there is also shown after the successfully installation of a module or plugin:
Upgrade Methods :
Standard joomla reinstall method. OR
Module supports upgrade method. You can install new version directly over this version. Uninstallation is not required. Backup any customized file before upgrading, your settings would be saved though. OR
Use JA Extensions Manager Component for easy upgrades and rollbacks. Watch Video.Phill ModeratorPhill

July 26, 2011 at 7:04 pm #403171It all depends on the module or component in question. Not all touch the database but some do. As you do not specify exactly what modules you are updating it is impossible for me to tell. For instance all videos reloaded writes to the database to add various things. In fact when the author of that was alerted to a security issue he provided 2 update methods only 1 of which affected the database.
When you said overwrite the files I assumed you meant using an ftp app.
Please also be aware that not all components on the JED allow the upgrade method. Some insist that you uninstall first. Fortunately most developers do support it.
Good luck with your updates and be sure to tell us how you get on. I would still recommend taking a copy of your site using Akeeba/Wamp andtesting on your local machine just in case things go wrong.

July 26, 2011 at 7:22 pm #403173i installed following extensions successfully (these are new from ja_teline_iv 1.6):
mod_janewspro.v1.0.3
mod_jabulletin.v1.0.3
mod_janews_featured.v1.0.3plg_system_jatabs.v1.0.7
plg_system_japopup.v1.0.1
plg_jathumbnail.v1.0.2com_jaextmanager.v1.0.2
i tested it with a blank standard joomla installation (without quickstart oder something else of joomlart).
the database consists of 33 tables before and after the installation of the extensions!i think that there are no problems. but i will avoid in future by overwritte files via drag and drop by a ftp app.
i will now update the extensions via installer forever.i hope that there are no problems when after installing of the new extensions following message appears:
Module supports upgrade method. You can install new version directly over this version. Uninstallation is not required.1 user says Thank You to dankumc for this useful post

July 26, 2011 at 7:26 pm #403175When the tables are written to there may be no change to the number of the tables but the contents may change. Hopefully you will not encounter any problems. Good luck.

July 26, 2011 at 7:43 pm #403178you make me thoughtful.
of course i can understand you but i cannot imagine that the content will be changed.
i uploaded a screen of the current database (new extensions are installed)what do you think which tables are affected by the update (of the extensions)?
that are the only tables which are named with an “update” in their table-name:
table jos_updates is empty
table jos_update_categories is empty
table jos_update_sites is filled with:update_site_id name type location enabled
1 Joomla Core collection http://update.joomla.org/core/list.xml 1
2 Joomla Extension Directory collection http://update.joomla.org/jed/list.xml 1table jos_update_sites_extensions is filled with:
update_site_id extension_id
1 700
2 700do you have other proposals?

July 26, 2011 at 7:49 pm #403179Just give it a go. As long as you have backups you will be fine. The intention is not to worry you, just to make sure you know what is going on behind the scenes as it really helps if you do run into any problems.

July 26, 2011 at 8:14 pm #403183Please see the guide on how to use the Extension Manager – http://wiki.joomlart.com/wiki/JA_Extensions_Manager/How-to
It is all quite simple. Set it up to look for updates on JA making sure your credentials are filled in on the Services Manager page. One click for each module will check available updates and a second click will perform the update giving you the option to roll back with a single click if things do not turn out as expected.
