What will happen if I get my 1.7.2 version updated to 2.5.1 version through Extension Manager: Update ?
Do I have to download a new version of the template?

Hello,

This is most probably what it’s going to happen but also have in mind that those Joomla versions are compatible and you might don’t need to change the template from 1.7.x to 2.5.x but! In some cases it’s inevitable.

In some cases the update is necessary, as for a step by step guide here is one from TomC -> http://www.joomlart.com/forums/topic/how-to-upgrade-from-j1-7-to-j2-5-manually/

But if your question refers to the template only and have already done some customizations in case you didn’t use template overwrites you will have to redo the changes.
