I am about to upgrade my site from 1.5.7 to 1.5.9 for my teline II site, but very nervous because this is my first time doing it. I have already backup up my site, so that’s not the issue. The instructions say to unzip the upgrade zip file and use ftp to upload to the server. my site content is in a folder like (http://www.mysite.com/folder), so I believe I have to upload the upgrade files to the ‘folder’.
When I unzipped, I found that the upgrade file has folders like component , plugin, administration and others, so in case I try to ftp, and just grab the upgrade folder (component) and throw it into my server, I think it will replace the component folder on my site, BUT I know the content of both folders(component) are not the same, I believe the one I have right now has more component than the upgrade version that I am about to upload, so wont upgrading replace the component folder with all it’s content.
Please I need steps in successful upgrade from 1.5.7 to 1.5.9 and still have all my existing component
    Thanks

First make sure you have the right upgrade file you should need: Joomla_1.5.7_to_1.5.9-Stable-Patch_Package.zip

You are quite correct for all your other points. You need to unpack the files on your system and then upload to your webhost. If you site would be running in http://www.mysite.com/folder then you would indeed have to upload it in that folder.

It is normal that your upgrade file has less files in for example its component folder as it only contains files that have been upgraded. If you upload the folder all extra folders who already are in your components folder will remain intact and only a couple core joomla files will be changed. You will keep your existing components.

And you also have a backup so it should be ok 🙂

In case you didnt see it yet upgrade instruction guide from joomla:
