I am using the 1.2 version of JA Social on JomSocial 2.0, and the JAT3 that got installed with that which was, at the time, 1.1.9. I am trying to get my stuff more current (including going to JS 2.2 when JA Social is ready) but in the meantime I notice that JAT3 is significantly updated.

Is it safe to upgrade JAT3 in isolation of the templates that use it? If I have to upgrade the JA Social template as well, is there a way to ensure that my local changes to the template won’t get overwritten and/or broken?

Please use the JA Extension Manager. That way if problem occur then you can roll back with a simple click.

All should work and if you use the Extension Manager then in theory you should not loose your changes but it doesn’t always work out. Before you start use Akeeba Backup to take a full backup of your site just in case.

While I can use Extensions Manager to upgrade Extensions Manager and JAT3 (on a test clone site), I cannot update JA Social or even see the differences. I keep getting prompted for authentication information to the update service.

That is correct, you neet to put your user credentials in. On the left you will see a services manager menu item. Click on that and edit the settings fot JA Update Service. JA require you to put in the same logon you use here or anyone with a copy of JA Extension Manager could download templates.

Yes thanks, but when I put in valid credentials it is not accepting them. I should have made that more clear.
