April 30, 2010 at 1:16 am #150758If I already have a template installed, how do I install another template without overriding the existing one? Is it possible with quick start?

April 30, 2010 at 3:24 am #342131NO…do NOT use the Quickstart if you already have a Joomla instance operational.
Quickstart includes a complete instance of the Joomla core which will be overwritten…and it will likely screw up the connection with your database, etc.If you have a working template…then all you want to do is simply install the template.zip file. It will remain independent of your original…and you can switch back and forth between the two.
SEE ADMINISTRATOR > EXTENTIONS > TEMPLATE MANAGER. You more than likely have two or three templates already installed. (Joomla comes with three of its own). In this area is where you’ll begin to understand how to switch between templates.
Have fun!
John.May 2, 2010 at 7:52 am #342333Hi,

May 2, 2010 at 12:46 pm #342345a) you don`t have installed the template, bud you probably installed the complete package of template (including quickstart, template, modules, plugins, .. etc.)
b) you don`t have set the directories of joomla writable
check: administrator – help – system info – Directory Permissions
all of this site must beset writableMay 2, 2010 at 1:02 pm #342346Thanks for your reply, but I keep having the problem:
– What I am trying to upload is the correct file (only the template .zip, not the full package )
– I checked and all my files in directory permissions are “writable” and green..I am working in localhost using a xampp portable on external hard disk..can this be the cause somehow?
Do I have to edit the configuration.php file? Thanks

May 2, 2010 at 1:08 pm #342347xampp is ok, I have use it also
so, do you have right path to TEMP ang LOG directories in joomla?
admin – site – Global Configuration – system – Path to Log folder
admin – site – Global Configuration – server – Path to Temp-folderexample:
D:SERVERhtdocsjoomlalogs
D:SERVERhtdocsjoomlatmpMay 2, 2010 at 1:15 pm #342348My current paths appear to be as follow:
Path to Log folder: G:xampp-win32-1.7.1xampphtdocsmysitelogs
Path to Temp-folder G:xampp-win32-1.7.1xampphtdocsmysitetmpG: is because the site and xampp are on an external hard disk
(mysite is also the name of my db and site folder)
is there something wrong?thanks very much for your support

May 2, 2010 at 2:42 pm #342365It is strange
free templates you said, that you installed
Ja templates have problems* JFolder::create: Infinite loop detected
* Warning! Failed to move file.this error is, when you have problems with LOGS and TMP directories
but you said, that this is okhmm, try this:
run setup_xampp.bat and relocate XAMPP (nr 2), portable (Y)Do you install joomla to the XAMPP with Joomal install guide, or you have copy from FTP and mysql?
Try clean TMP directory
May 2, 2010 at 4:02 pm #342384About the paths I am not really sure they are ok.
Should I change them? if yes how?May 2, 2010 at 5:16 pm #342398Problem solved!
instead than leaving my dowloaded JA templates on the external hard disk I moved them to the pc.
From this new location they could be uploaded successfully.
So it seems that the path does not reach the external hd located files, but only the ones in the pc.Thanks again for your interest and support, now I can start working on JA 🙂
