I cannot figure out how to take advantage of CSS sprites and sprite png file in default purity II icons folder.

Do I still have to upload menu images to images/stories or can I somehow use images from the
icons-sprites-silk.png in the icons folder?

The images in the menu are taken form core Joomla image file:
images/stories/home-1.png
images/stories/typo-1.png

Hello,
For showing images in menu core Joomla functionality is used.
If you want to use sprites for these images you would have to be able to position the sprite for every single image, and as far as I know there isn’t such a possibility in menu-image-settings.

Of course you could code it yourself, as every menu-item a-tag has a its unique id.
You can read that in source code of your page.
