    Hi

I’d really appreciate some help. My site shows VERY long times to first byte for a first view – around 29 seconds in the example provided. On the second and third views (not repeat views), it drops to a reasonable 0.68 seconds and 0.65 seconds. You can see the test result at http://www.webpagetest.org/result/120111_WP_2TPHV/ . This is typical of every test and shows when one accesses the site normally.

I have raised it with my server host, Rochen, where I have a Managed Virtual Server. They say that the site appears normal as far as they can see. They suggest I upgrade to a Dedicated Server.

    Thanks
    Carl

    Capeinfo –

    Thanks for dropping in.
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

I’m not able to access your site backend to have a look.
If you’re issue is still valid, please update your information and get back with us.

    Have a GREAT weekend!
    John.

    Hi John
I’ve updated the passwords so you should be able to access the backend now.
It is still a problem but has improved a bit – I’ve tried everything to clean up and trim the site.
I will be moving it to a dedicated server at the end of this month, but I would still like to make sure that everything is as efficient as possible.
Thanks… and I hope you have a great weekend too 🙂

    Carl,

Ran a speed test on your site and you really seem to be rocking. (between 1.42 and 1.91 seconds)
You have a LOT of things going on in your site so it is NOT going to be transistor fast. Content management systems, by their very nature, are much slower – relatively speaking – to a straight html site.

That being said, the only improvements I could see would be optimizing your images. 80% of a pages latency comes from images. Most on the homepage don’t have height/width attributes…which slows down the load process. Having them there help the page not to have to think about how big a space it needs for the image.

And look at your offsite image cache. Currently set to just an hour. Depending on how often you update your site each day…that can, should be extended.

Components/modules/plugins not enabled, still draw some time – CSS loading for instance – so getting rid of anything you are not using and don’t intend to use is good. Uninstalling them is MUCH better than disabling in terms of speed.

This is all REALLY picky stuff…but can help speed up your site…and moving to the dedicated server can help too.

Great site by the way…I caught myself stopping and just looking and reading. Quite interesting stuff for this American.
    Have fun!
    John.
