My Demo site is very slow — more than 10seconds even at its fastest.

I included below a portion of the page source of one section — World — showing on the Front Page.

In short, the Teline II script allows the reader a preview of the contents of the listed articles.

    Question:

What script enables this feature? How can it be disabled?

    Thanks Hainn,

I decided to create a new

    CGC’s Sandbox

because the old one I posted in my other thread had been drastically changed already. The one I provided above (it has URL obviously has minimal changes. This new
CGC’s Sandbox contains the isssue I raised in this thread, as well as just an exploration of where I can add “Hot Topic” modules.

I will provide you administrator and FTP access, so that if you wish, do more modifications to “deactivate” the script discussed in this thread.

    <em>@Menalto 86984 wrote:</em><blockquote>ITs the module ja-news</blockquote>

I know that Menalto. But, actually it is also used in all of the modules in the backend. The worse part in the backend and that the “text that shows up” does not disappear immediately even if I move my cursor to another area of the backend page I am working on.

Would you mind looking at the

    CGC’s Sandbox

if you can resolve this issue or any of the related issues that I exploring in the CGC’s Sandbox right now?

This will include creating new positions for modules like Hot Topic or the Newsflash either at the very top of the page or between the Magazine menu and Main Body.

    Thanks.

    Hi Hainn,

I think that service uses high speed, T1, connections. I have a cable high speed connection at home, and I get 10-20 seconds, with a few below 10 seconds some time during off peaks. However, this is balanced by slow connections as long as 30 seconds, or they drop off completely.

The “ideal” is somewhere below 5 seconds, in the US.

However, the target audience of some of the sites I create — for example the Philippines website — the modem speed there averages 52kb per second still. Based from the estimates of another speed testing site I used, the speed would translate into well over several minutes.

I cheked some of my Teline II sites using the iPhone and they are timing out — no show.

Thus, I want to remove as many scripts that are not really crucial. One of them would be the script that provides the preview of the contents of “article and section links” in JA News module.

What script enables this preview? I want to delete it.

If your audience is 52kb connections, i suggest you rethink the website.
Then you need to make a list: Which features does this website need?

That is quite true Menalto and I agree completely.

That is why I disabled most of the whistles and bells in the Teline II, at least as far as the frontpage is concerned.

But, I do not think it is the features per se, but the scripts themselves. For example, the New York Times is far more complex (it offers more features) and sophisticated in design and presentation than any of the Joomla-Joomlart templates but it is still consistently quite fast. Of course, I am sure that they also have very reliable servers, and that help.

I am also a firm believer of the idea that if it could be made simpler, there is no need to add complexity — known as KISS.

I do not know how to implement it, but in the end it all boils down to scripting and how they are presented. For example, part of reason for the speed of Google’s search — based from what I read — was based partly on how they arranged their scripts.

Professional online papers for example employ a trick so that some features of a page appear first — to allow a page to appear faster– before the rest of the page appears. I used to do this in simple html pages, but I do not know how to implement it in PHP.

Yahoo also has a good online presentation on optimization, and based from the suggestions — the Joomla 1.5.x-Teline II needs quite a lot of optimization, as you yourself pointed out in one of the threads here exploring Optimization: You stated also elsewhere that if you dis it yourself, at least the Joomla 1.5.x-Teline II could require a 40% scripting rewrite.

For example: Why use gifs when the text equivalent would suffice to specify a CSS tag?

    Unnecessary scripts

While it dazzles some people, I do not think that the “High Slide???” scripting of the Registration-Login adds much value to the visitor-reader. So why keep that at all and why keep it in the Frontpage? More commands to execute for the server.

This is true of the script that is the focus of this thread. Most of the more well known online papers I read do not have a need to employ this scripting — to entice their visitor-readers.

    CSS Issues

I was reviewing the pagesource of my Demo templates, and there are quite a few undefined CSS tags. On the other hand, t appears that there are many legacy CSS tags that are kept with no functions.

From my own experience (by trial and error when I started), I found out early own that a complex nested tabs slows down the presentation of a page.

I think the CSS also are overly complex, and could be simplified more to minimum. In a stable production site, it may do well to integrate them.

    Independent Modular Extensions

The ability to incorporate extensions from independent third party developers is one of the strengths of Joomla. However, it is also one of its weaknesses. Incompatiblity is not rare. And because there is no coordination — integration of these extensions to better work together is a significant problem.

There are more of course, and I do not have the expertise to either know them or to implement them.

I am sure Menalto, that people like you with expertise in scripting would be able to help on this — especially in optimizing the final product.

In the end, this is the basic flaw of the constant need to create new templates — there is no time to create truly stable templates.

Odd, I did not get the automated email that should be sent to me, if there is a reply to this thread. I would not have known it had I not been looking at the list of threads I initiated. Sorry for the delayed response, Menalto.

There really is a need to optimize the Joomla 1.5.x, especially in combination with Teline II. The Teline IIv1.6 template is more stable now but even from my non-technical review of the CSS and the scripts, there is a lot of room for improvement to optimize the software,

I think a customized and optimized Joomla 1.5.x-Teline II will be very useful to any user who likes the Teline II template a lot. The experience in such customization and optimization may then be applied to other templates.

I will provide you access to my

    Sanbox

or perhaps another one where I have done extensive modifications of the Demo Template.

    Thanks again for the offer.
