I need to build my company website using Joomla and Ja Edenite. It is software consulting and product development company.I am Joomla newbie.
I have some css and html experience and lot of Apache/Java/python/db programming experience.

I may need to do some changes to the template like removing the right module that display employee pictures and reducing the header height.

I would like to know what skills are must to build a professional looking website?
That will tell me if I can do it myself or need to hire outside help.

to setup a site does not require any detailed techincal knowledge. from what you’ve described about yourself, you’ll be able to do things without any difficulty at all.

all you need to know is what you want your final website to look like and then after using either a new installation or the quickstart to get you going.

to remove modules it just takes a few clicks of the user interface and to be honest, as a professional web developer myself, I couldn’t believe how easy it was to do things with joomla!.

what kind of functionality are you looking out of your website?

the things you discribed have more to do with having a working knowledge of joomla and not the template

you will have a learning curve, but with your background it should be a short. set up a couple of test sites to learn joomla before you make a site for a client.

all the things you mentioned are just check and radio buttons in the joomla administrator backend, no tech needed.

Thanks, I will give it try myself. I was afraid , after spending few weeks , I will find that I have to learn PHP and Photoshop and flash to continue.

I am planning to use Joomla 1.5.6 or later as it is latest and SEO friendly.
    Thanks again.

    few more questions…

    1) How to get or create the rotating banners with my own marketing statement on them. I think using images in background, I can get images from sites like istockphoto or from my digital camera would be the easiest way to go.

    2) Blog – I understand building blog in joomla is easy. Just like the developer blog on Joomla site built using Joomla itself.

    3) For forum I can use fire board. Any suggestions here.

    4) extended registration module – I can buy.

    5) SEO – I understand Joomla 1.5 is search engine friendly out of box unlike joomla 1.0

    6) Paypal integration using NVP/Web API, – There must be some module out there I can buy.

that should be all I would need for now. later I would be adding videos, demos and trainings etc to my site

Any suggestions on above would be appreciated.

the only one that is complicated is the paypal integration

all of the rest are joomla related, you need to get those answers on the joomla.org forum as this site is for the templates.

joomla and the templates are too separate pieces of the architecture.

set up a few joomla installs on a test environment, download and install some modules and components from the joomla site, start playing with it no, do not try to learn it when building a real site for someone.
