October 18, 2011 at 5:28 pm #169798Hi Folks, J1.5 but will later upgrade to 1.7, Teline4 will upgrade to 1,7 later.
I need a good business directory that I can integrate with Jom & Teline4. It needs to be a complete solution.
I know about Sobi2/SobiPro and Mosets, while maybe OK, they dont yet seem to be complete for J1.7 & Im not sure about features.
Apart from good user and package management, I must be able to customise the listings easily with html.
Better – packages will be able to manage Group/User levels for displaying content etc eg links on/off , extended listing or not etc
Free is good, but I will pay if its a good product.
Does anyone use or know phpMyDirectory, Web 2.0 Directory v2.5, shweDirectory, Meeplace – compared to Sobi or Mosets??
Any others? Can anyone suggest a good solution.
Thanks heaps & regardsTomC ModeratorTomC

October 18, 2011 at 9:58 pm #420082Hi Tom, thanks for the input, I was looking at Mosets so thanks for the vote. Im not clear about Zoo since I am already commited to a theme.
If Zoo can fit inside an exiting theme it also looks interesting, I need to read more
Thanks.TomC ModeratorTomC

ZOO is actually a component – much like K2 – which can be installed/integrated into most any Joomla template.jneubauer Friendjneubauer

October 19, 2011 at 2:44 am #420102I would second Toms suggestion of ZOO for this.
ZOO is very, very flexible – in fact, I’d imagine you could probably set it all up without touching a single line of code to arrange or re-arrange content elements, and customize listings however you want.
What’s good about the latest version of ZOO is that each item (description, link, tags, etc.) has it’s own access control fully integrated with the new 1.7 ACL scheme.
This means that you can automatically segment which usergroups get to see which elements of each listing!seelife Friendseelife

October 19, 2011 at 4:22 pm #420235Hi Tom & jneubauer – Ok, then this sounds like its doable. I will not be upgrading Jom till K2 is stable, but intend to.
My next quest is to install JomSocial as well by its less pressing. Can I ask if you have personal experience of Zoo?
As Im new to Joomla, the concept of Zoo is harder for me to grasp. Im more used to simpler CMS and mostly PHPFox. But If I can get close to that I good to go. The customising listings and user group is realllly important to me. Its also got to look (or be able to) business savvy. Thanks for the advice & best regards to bothTomC ModeratorTomC

October 19, 2011 at 6:28 pm #420276At this point in time, Jon (jneubauer) has much more experience with it than I. I have looked through the info on the ZOO web page – and I am, like you, actually anxious to give it a try for a business directory as well.
However, for specific information as to relative ease of use and customization, I will defer to my friend Jon.

October 19, 2011 at 6:34 pm #420278yes, ZOO is a bit different to learn – but I think the differences is also what makes ZOO unique 🙂
I think you’ll be able to get very close to your desired layout just using the drag and drop interface.
You can always modify or add your own ZOO template to take things further.
I would check out the documentation for ZOO as well, they’ve got phenomenal documentation!Back to your mention of K2 – you do know that K2 is now stable right? v2.5 for 1.5/1.7 was released two days ago!

October 19, 2011 at 6:55 pm #420284Hi – great news the K2 is stable. We just had to start in J1.5 to get under way with development.
I have not released the site – but am about to – the directory can tagg along soon after. We have not heavily modified, just tweeked the templat we got. Do you think that is safe to upgrade to J1.7. We use a Joomart template and plugins.
Do you think its better to wait a weeke or so just to let the dust settle and because I am so new to Joom – Im tempted to get someone to assist ??? – I have done lots of web work but Joom is so new Im not confident in all its mysteries 🙂

My personal opinion . . . allow some time for dust to settle.HOWEVER, if you’re under a time crunch, you can certainly try to find someone to assist you via one of the freelance boards – such as Joomlancers or Scriptlance or Freelance.

October 26, 2011 at 8:27 am #421635Hi Again Folks, Still trying to get tto the bottom of this.
I am in serious need to install a good working business directory. I have several thousand business listing to import – this cannot be a mickey mouse solution. Is there a payment system for Zoo – or would you simply use a separate payment module to handle any payments across the site – if so what would you recommend. Mosets sounds OK, but the payments is 3rd party so by the time I but Mosets, plus Payments installation & membership, Mosets costs outweigh any value.
Im begining to think a main stream commercial app is a better solution considering the cost of integration …..
Any thoughts

October 28, 2011 at 2:40 am #422047Well, it’s really more an issue of how you structure your links and re-directs. Using either ZOO or Mosets Tree for your Business Directory are both excellent choices, and you can include links to your ecommerce application and/or payment gateway for purchases – if that is part of the dynamic of your plan for the directory.
So really, it’s a matter of how you plan it out and, then, implement the plan through the information, images and links you establish as you’re inputting the information into the directory.
