I did not renew my developer membership with much pain and grief. I like JA but got totally frustrated with no one listening or discussing about the possibility of upgrading the most requested JA 1.5 templates.

The Problem: Once a template is selected by certain brand and we adapt it, its difficult to ask them change it 2 years down the line when all their marketing materials etc. uses it. I understand the need for balancing priorities by JA where its important to release new quality products and the strain on resources to update old products. However, given the above mentioned argument and looking at various requests rom other members made, I think that you can find a solution which would make everyone happy!

The solution: Is simple in my view. You cost the time required for upgrading a J1.5 template. Create ‘Make it Happen’ paypal collection page for popular old templates and allow members to contribute (70% members + 30% JA). When the collection reaches 70% of the total cost you upgrade that template. Everyone is happy!

I think thats the least you could do for loyal JA clients without depleting your own resources.

I hope I receive a well considered response, at the least.

    Best wishes.

    Hi koolac,

We wanted to upgrade 1.5 templates to 1.6-2.5 version and you can read about our intentions in this blog post.

The problem was which framework should we upgrade them too? The 1.5 templates are simple templates and moving them to any framework would be as good as making a new template. So the question was which framework version should we use, T3v1 or T3v2? and what to do when it comes to future version of Joomla!? Over the period we would be discontinuing the T3v1 and T3v2 frameworks in favor of T3v3, so keeping less products on those framework makes sense.

Last whole year went in the R & D for the responsive designs, T3v3 framework development, which was very important as Joomla! 3.0 onwards its bootstrapped and changes everything again. The only good news we had during the 1.6-1.7-2.5-3.0 versions was THIS. The change in release cycle gives us the time we need.

We do plan to upgrade 10-20 of the older Joomla 1.5 templates to T3v3 version this year and they will be chosen based on member vote but we would probably discontinue the 2006-2007 designs, they are way too old and we would focus on good designs from 2009 and some from 2008. You can see the current list of templates (year wise).

We have the blog post coming up soon for the production plan for 2013 and the above upgrade work is part of the same.

and trust me, its been a difficult time with so many Joomla! versions released in rapid succession, we never got the breathing space we needed to pause and put things to order.

    Regards

    Arvind

I agree with you 100%!! I have many customers who are stuck with a 1.5.x joomla installation because they don’t want to change the look and feel of their website after so many years.
Needless to say that most of the joomlart competitors have already updated their templates so migration is possible.
This is the reason why I didn’t renew my joomlart dev subscription either.
