    How is it possible for the template like this not to have widths for various spanx classes?

    .row-fluid .span9
    .row-fluid :first-child
    .row-fluid .span3

    Why? How? I’m a little surprised. 😮

    JA University template on your site is using Bootstrap and you can check out this documentation , you will understand why it needs to have span tag

    The template I’m using does NOT have various spanx classes defined. I’m not sure why/how. I had to add a few to custom.css to get around some things.

    Which area are you referring to on your site? Things at least look to be running smoothly from what I can see. I checked directly on your site but I still see it’s using spanx, see the screenshot
