Let me ask this simple question which is easier and involve less time for non-techie members:

The Joomla way or the Joomlart way of updating files?

    Joomla way:

    1. Joomla volunteer staff identify modified files (more than likely less than 1Mb)
    2. Zip and provide for download
    3. Joomla users download update file, unzip and upload. Done. QED.

    Joomlart way (as proposed here)

    1. Provide the entire kit (~30Mb for Teline II when unpacked) — includes modified and unmodified files
    2. Let members guess whether the “current” file is revised or not relative to their previous download (see Arvind’s response post, no definite information for members to know whether the current Joomlart file is the same as the file they downloaded previously)
    3. Download
    4. Unzip (it takes several minutes to unpack the quickstart, and sometimes it does not even work)
    5. Download firezilla (check if it is compatible with your computer, learn how to use it, and pray everything will work)
    6. Use the firezilla to identify modified files
    7. Upload modified files

Many members have requested this in many many many postings: Update the date (and this case specific time) when a new version has been released. Is there anyone of you who can justify that it is difficult to do this?

My download says a total of 130, Many of them were repeated Teline II downloads, especially in the Summer of 2008. Why? Teline II has been revised so many times, but it still has as release date: 08-05-2008 Am I supposed to have supernatural powers to know whether my previous download was the latest?

firezilla may have a good application for some purposes but what if it is not compatible with my old computer? or I do not know how to use it yet? I looked at the FAQs, and there are many ways when it might not work. Who shall help me resolve such problems?

Joomla update was intended to simplify the work of the average Joomla user.
Is it really too very difficult for Joomlart fo follow what Joomla is doing — make it easier for members to finish a task?

There might be another release of beta zip in the coming two days… as the demo and SVN are still bit different and once the developer go through the commits made today, another release might be made (can not confirm this though). It might take longer.. so that max is covered in each update.

    Ooh cgc0202,

Please. The zips were downloaded by members way before the announcement was made. It would be really great if you could concentrate more on the bug reports for now please. Lets take up one issue at one time, there are too many requests/suggestions from you in numerous threads, it can be difficult to concentrate on one.

You quoting me almost every instance makes me feel like that i should stop informing about whats up and whats coming. We been trying to provide as much information as possible to everyone.

For now please concentrate and help us in making Teline III Stable.

Moving your post and my post to General forums as new thread. The way Joomla do and the way Joomlart do is a matter of general discussion… it got nothing to do with Teline.

This issues is originally raised from the JA Teline III Beta download, however, there are some clarification about all of JA stable release download

    Joomla way:

    1. Joomla volunteer staff identify modified files (more than likely less than 1Mb)
    2. Zip and provide for download
    3. Joomla users download update file, unzip and upload. Done. QED.

Right. However, they have no database alternation even from the Joomla 1.0 which made things easier

Provide the entire kit (~30Mb for Teline II when unpacked) — includes modified and unmodified files

Ok, JA files are quite big, but it is reasonably big: in standard JA template or extension download you will find:

    1. Quickstart (Include the latest untouch Joomla version getting from Joomla.org SVN + Templates + Included extensions + Database). This package help users can have a clone of a site like our demo.
    2. Templates (for the installation on a working site )
    3. Extensions (user can install 1 or all extension depending on their need)

Let members guess whether the “current” file is revised or not relative to their previous download (see Arvind’s response post, no definite information for members to know whether the current Joomlart file is the same as the file they downloaded previously)

This is more a JA Teline III beta download related issue. For JA templates update we do update what has been fixed & why it is updated. Currently we can not provide a batch for all of the updates because that will be very confusing when there are too many patches or download packages. You can imagine we have 80 templates and all of them must be checked, updated with Joomla new version whenever they have new version. And if we release the patches then there will be thousand of patchs: The patch A may work for those who are using Joomla 1.5.14 but won’t work for Joomla 1.5.13 or earlier.

    Download
Unzip (it takes several minutes to unpack the quickstart, and sometimes it does not even work)

Download firezilla (check if it is compatible with your computer, learn how to use it, and pray everything will work)

Use the firezilla to identify modified files
    Upload modified files

You don’t have to use any FPT program to download JA packages but it is more convinient to have one on your computer. I finish download any packages within 4-5 minutes, and it is a good time for a cup of coffee :).

About the modified files, most of users also need to apply all the changes they have made to the css or html during their Joomla development, this a good way to master Joomla as well as the important work when using any Joomla template

Thanks Arvind and Hung for sharing your perspective.

I was a bit frustrated when I posted (in the Teline III) the one placed here, as a separate thread. Hung, if you recall, we had this discussion Summer last year when we were in the middle of the Teline II revisions.

I do not want the tone in the first thread to fester, so I decided that it might be better to try to find a compromise.

I will post it in the Feedback as “Making things easier to work for everyone — a compromise” when I get a chance.

For the updates, there are three critical stuff that should be met:

    1. Date-time stamp any new release update
    2. Each new release must have a unique ID in progression
    3. Provide a more detailed and accurate changelog of the latest release — focusing on the template mainly

Kindly close this thread. Those interested with this topic may respond to the feedback thread, when it is posted.
