January 4, 2012 at 3:34 pm #172427Hi there,
I am interested in Amazon’s S3 Cloud feature, but am not sure exactly what it will do for me. I’ve read through this thread, and Amazon’s pages; I understand about A3S hosting/storing image files for quick retrieval around the world, but beyond, that it’s all very confusing. Do I need extras like the CDN portion of Amazon? Or is this part of the AS3?
I have a large and heavy (extension-wise), website and while I don’t want to break the site up into mini sites, I’m considering doing so to knock down the site’s bulkiness.
Would the AS3 will help me in keeping the site intact as it is extension-wise? Would it load faster? Am I able to store the entire website on AS3?
I would appreciate if someone could explain in layman’s terms what AS3 will do for an extension heavy website (and, for someone like me who can’t just quite grasp the concept of AS3).
Thanks,
Cheryll

January 7, 2012 at 4:19 am #432875JA Amazon S3 Component brings the power of cloud computing to Joomla! Hybrid hosting is now possible, load site from your server and files (images/ documents) from Amazon CDN (Content Delivery Network). Install, upload files and enjoy the benefits of Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) cloud hosting!
[FONT=arial]It works on a simple principle of file uploading and updating their location path on the fly. Once you upload your images / files from the selected folder to the Amazon S3 Servers, the plugin updates the location path of uploaded files and on client request, all uploaded files are requested from Amazon S3 and not from the site folders. This in turns save the server load and bandwidth at the same time. Loading is faster for the end-user. You can disable the plugin and your file links are back to normal. The video below should give you the insight of the work flow involved. Help links are updated in the help section of the component, from where once can view the video and also other information.

January 7, 2012 at 11:39 am #432912Good morning TomC,
Thank you for taking the time to explain it to me. I have poured over the info supplied by Amazon & JA- the more I read/watched, the more confused I became (she says, while chuckling to herself and wondering if she’s getting too old for technology). While I grasped the concept of AS3 with images, I wasn’t sure how, or if it could be applied to other files on a website.
I set up an account yesterday, and will configure it later today, then start creating buckets and see what I can and can’t do.
Thanks again TomC- your time, experience and willingness to help is priceless and much appreciated.
Have a great day!
Cheryll (the lights are on, but very dim)
