How is JoomlArt developing / upgrading extensions for Joomla 1.6 ?
JoomlArt has in its inventory over 70 + extensions, some are just template specific and some are standalone. Standalone extensions are part of JAEC, whereas, the complimentary extensions are used in our templates and provided on an as is basis to the club members.
With JED discussion in view, It would be impractical for JoomlArt to bundle both the J 1.5 and J 1.6 native extension in the same package and therefore, we are going to maintain independent versions / packages / development for our extensions.
WHY?
Lets look at the example of JA Slideshow II module, we use it in over 20 templates. Now with J 1.6 versions of templates the number shall become 40 templates. Now for each bug fix / improvement we would release a version affecting 40 templates... before releasing such version we need to test it for all the 40 templates. It would be a mess for the Test and QA team and not to mention the chaos in our ever-busy forum. multiply this with the number of extensions in our inventory, you can imagine the whole picture.

1. Can I upgrade my 1.6 extensions from 1.5 extension
For modules / Plugins, you will need to install the Joomla 1.6 package and reconfigure. For JA components such as JA JobBoard, JA Voice, JA Comment and JA Showcase, we shall provide the migration / upgrade guide from Joomla 1.5 to Joomla 1.6.
2. What is the best way I keep my extensions updated from JA ?
(A) Places to look for?
JA always announces the updates for each extension via (a) Twitter (b) Update blog. At the same time, version status / changelogs / detailed file / folder comparison can be accessed at the JA Update Central Portal.
(B) How to update?
Usually how to update info is mentioned in the announcement on the Update blog. JoomlArt also have developed an JA Extensions Manager, which supports the upgrade /rollback feature and it can be deployed with ease for such upgrades.
3. There are some extensions in 1.5 which I dont see it in 1.6
Either they have been replaced by an alternative extension or we have decided to phase them out in favor of new extensions.
4. Features Stripped from the extensions ?
Features for extensions may have been removed keeping the future development in view or some may be restored back in coming versions. For example, extensions supporting K2 or other 3rd party extensions (of which J 1.6 counterparts have not been released) will be updated in due course of time with such features.
